Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities
February 24, 2017
A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday,
February 24, 2017 in the Brookings City & County Government Center with the following members
present: Jessie Kuechenmeister, Shawn Minor, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Lonnie Bayer, Nadine Gjerde,
Sylvia Buboltz, Matt Simet, and Ruth Harper. Les Rowland, Dave Miller and City ADA Coordinator Shari
Thornes were absent.
Call to order. Kuechenmeister called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.
Agenda. The agenda was adopted as printed.
Next meeting:
- Availability was discussed. Kuechenmeister will consult with Shari Thornes and the finalized
meeting date will be sent via email.
Updates/Reports:
ABLE Award Nomination Process & Schedule. Kuechenmeister reminded the committee that the date
for the event is going to be sooner than previous years. It was suggested we brainstorm ideas, collect
nominations and make a decision March/April. The committee talked about possible businesses. Tours
will need to be arranged.
Avera Medical Center Parking Lot. Gjerde, Miller and Thornes met with Darrell from Avera Brookings
Medical. Darrell followed up and stated they would be doing everything discussed except the spaces in
the front and the striping as that is not in the budget. The Committee suggested a follow up meeting with
the clinic director.
Public Education Subcommittee
o Snow Removal Brochure. The Committee approved proceeding with the snow removal brochure
as previously reviewed.
o Spring Speaker - Gjerde was in contact with Richard Sternadori, Great Plains ADA Center, to
provide a forum/workshop this fall on accessible design and emergency management and he is
very interested in coming. She also has been in contact with Jessica Garcia Fritz, SDSU
Architecture Program, regarding student participation. Gjerde proposed a day long workshop
with separate morning and afternoon sessions. The cost for Sternadroi is $300, plus lodging fees.
The Committee approved moving forward.
o Flash Drives. The Committee the quote received for customized “business-card style” flash
drives with committee information and image. Simet offered to research other companies and
will report back to the group via email.
o Housing: Hartenhoff-Crooks suggested a topic the subcommittee may want to consider as a
priority is educating landlords about emotional support animals.
PAC Expansion Kuechenmeister briefed the committee on a follow up meeting had with Colin Gaalswyk,
Gjerde and Thornes to go over comments for the PAC Expansion. Kuechenmeister is preparing a written
letter to be submitted. Parking and seating remain primary concerns.
Membership. The student position on the Committee is still vacant. Members will recruit potential
members to apply.
City ADA Coordinator:
o No report.
