January 17, 2019
The Brookings Airport Board was called to order by Judy McLaughlin on
Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 3:30 PM in Conference Room # 241 located on the
second floor of the City & County Government Center at 520 3rd Street,
Members present were Brian VanLiere, Lynn Riedesel, Ory Smidt, and
McLaughlin. Also present were Airport Manager Matthew Sommerfeld, City
Engineer Jackie Lanning, Pheasants Fury -Paul Hanusa, Brady Klocker- SDSU, Sam
Bjornestad - SDSU, and others.
Item #2 - (Riedesel/Smidt) Motion to approve the agenda. All present voted
aye, MOTION CARRIED.
Item #3 - (VanLiere/Smidt) Motion to approve the December 20, 2018 minutes.
All present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED.
Item #4 - The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 21, 2019 at
3:30pm in the City & County Government Center at 520 3rd Street.
Item #5a - Winter Operations - Sommerfeld explained that there were two snow
events since the last meeting. The biggest event was during Christmas.
Because of the closure, there were two flights that weren't able to fly out.
Item #6a - Lease Agreements - Lanning explained that there are 2 leases that
need to be approved. One is with United Development for the hangar that
they just built. This hangar is 9,600 square feet and the lease will be 15 cents per
square foot since it is commercial use.
The other lease is with Wilde Air for the fuel tank area. This lease will be for 8,960
square feet at 15 cents per square foot also.
(VanLiere/Riedesel) Motion to approve the lease agreements. All present voted
aye, MOTION CARRIED.
Item #7 - Airport Manager's Report - Sommerfeld reported that they have
discovered that the GCO needs to be moved to the other side of the terminal.
This should fix the issues that pilots are currently experiencing,
The ILS is working fine now. The FAA will do maintenance once a month and a
NOTAM will be issued for approximately 4 to 5 hours each time the maintenance
is complete.
The Beacon isn't working again. Staff is going to call Muth to take a look before
having anyone else come in.
Items #8 FBO Report -
Paul updated the committee on recent flights. Their fuel sales have increase on
AvGas but decreased on jet fuel.
Item #9 - SDSU Report - Sam Bjornestad said they met with Sommerfeld and
Lanning to discuss hangar space as their hangar is full. They have about 70
people flying and are in need of flight instructors. They are looking at filling the
flight instructor positions. SDSU will run the summer private pilot class.
tems # l0a -Annual Report- Sommerfeld distributed the Annual Report for the
Airport Department. He noted that they operations increased in 2018. The
committee reviewed the 2018 Traffic Report also. Sommerfeld said from an
operational standpoint, Brookings is the 2nd busiest airport in SD. The Airport
Board Annual Report will be forthcoming at next month's meeting.
Item #10b - Election of President and Vice -President -
(Riedesel/Smidt) Motion to nominate Brian VanLiere as President and Judy
McLaughlin as Vice President for 2019. All present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED.
The meeting was adjourned.
