HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 01-1991 RESOLUTION NO. 1-91 ENCOURAGING HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD WASTE AWARENESS WHEREAS, numerous hazardous household wastes (ie. paints, thinners, insecticides, waste oil, drain cleaners) are disposed of in South Dakota landfills, threatening groundwater supplies, and residents of the Brookings area do not have an appropriate site to dispose of these hazardous household wastes and, WHEREAS, the South Dakota State Legislature has passed a law to provide for appropriate disposal of hazardous household wastes in a program called Toxic Clean Up Days and, WHEREAS, the Board of Minerals and Environment has passed rules to implement Toxic Clean Up Days and has named Brookings as the site for the pilot program for Toxic Clean Up Days, tentatively scheduled for May 18, 1991 and, WHEREAS, the Toxic Clean Up Days program had broad citizen support represented by over 1, 600 signatures gathered on Dakota Rural Action's petition to implement Toxic Clean Up Days and has the endorsement of the Brookings Solid Waste Committee, the Catholic Rural Life Conference of Sioux Falls Diocese, the Recycling Coalition of South Dakota, South Dakota Peace and Justice Center and the South Dakota Resource Coalition and, WHEREAS, Toxic Clean Up Days cannot be implemented because appropriations have not been allocated to fund this program now, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Brookings City Commission and the Brookings County Commission call on Governor George Mickelson, the South Dakota State Legislature and the Department of Water and Natural Resources to make an appropriation for Toxic Clean Up Days to be used for promotion of the program, collection of the toxins and proper, safe disposal of the toxins and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Brookings City Commission pledge $100. 00 to be used for advertisement and promotion of the Toxic Clean Up Days program to be held in Brookings.
