URGIHG SUPPORT AHD PASSAGE OF SOUTH DAKOTA SAFETY BELT LAW
WHEREAS, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for
people between the ages of six and thirty-four in the United States;
and,
WHEREAS, the use of safety belts and child safety seats are knopn
to be one of the best defenses against drunk drivers; and,
WHEREAS, in 1991, 87. 3 percent of vehicle occupant pho were
killed were HOT r►earing safety belts, and 85. 6 percent of drivera
killed were HOT rearing safety belts.
WHEREAS, lap and shoulder belts, when used, are the single most
effective means for occupants to reduce the risk of death and serious
in�ury in a highMay crash.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Brookings City
Commiesion concurring therein, support the proposed safety belt
legislation.
