MICKELSON, Governor of the State of South Dakota and a late resident of the City of Brookings, was one of said eight citizens fatally injured in said crash, and WHEREAS, the people of the State of South Dakota of all persuasions sense the loss of eight citizens in a shocking and sudden unsuspected incident that resulted in the untimely death of the Chief Executive of our sovereign state of the Union of the United States of America, and WHEREAS, said Chief Executive, the Honorable GEORGE S. MICKELSON, Governor, was justly honored "in state" at the rotunda of the Capitol Building of the State of South Dakota, and WHEREAS, said "in state" recognition of the death of an active Governor in the performance of duties in the public interest extended and touched the minds and hearts of many here and elsewhere, and WHEREAS, the people of many cities and farms along and adjacent to U.S. Highway No. 14 from Pierre to Brookings witnessed the cortege of the last of a multitude of times said highway was traveled by the Honorable GEORGE S. MICKELSON from and to his home in the City of Brookings to the Capitol of the State of South Dakota in the City of Pierre, now therefore BE IT RESOLVED that the State of South Dakota, by and through the vested powers of the sovereign authority of state government designate, name and perpetuate for all posterity U.S. Highway No. 14 from Brookings to Pierre as the GEORGE S. MICKELSON MEMORIAL HIGHWAY by appropriate markings, postings and signs as a lasting tribute to GEORGE S. MICKELSON, Chief Executive of the State of South Dakota, who gave his life in the line of duty and service to the people he so loved in the country and communities of the said sovereign state of the United States of America. MICKELSOH MEMORIAL HIGHWAY/Resolution A true copy of our Resolution Ho. 44-93, unanimously approved by the City Commission, is enclosed for your consideration upon revievr thereof. Rumeroua people are anxious to support a lasting tribute to our late Governor. We believe this ia but one way to do so at a minimal cost. We have sent a copy of the encloaure to be filed with the Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Transportation at Pierre. I suspect the matter will be referred to the Director and Commissioners of the Division of HighMays for review. If the highway should be so designated, it may serve additionally as a notable link of our communities to the Capitol of our State for whom the late Governor gave his life in his commitment and dedication of service in the public interest. I am hopeful you may consider the concept of inerit and that you and the Governing Body of your City may approve a Resolution in support thereof.
