RESOLITTION NO. 80-95
ESTABLISHING GUIDELINES FOR EMPLOYEE RECOG1vITION AWARDS
WHEREAS, the Employee Recognition and Appreciation Committee, after much input
and discussion between employees and department heads, is recommending a system for future
employee recognition awards. This system is designed to recognize employees at increasing
levels based on years of service to the City of Brookings. The years of service honored will be
based on 5 year intervals according to the year of the appreciation recognition (EX: the 1995
event honors a11 employees hired in the years of 1990, 1985, 1980, etc., regardless of the month
hired; 1996 honors 1991, 1986, 1981, etc.) and;
WIREAS, the employee input we have received indicates that employees appreciated
the choice of a plaque or Brookings Bucks according to the years of service. The five (5) year
award value is based on the average cost of a plaque presented in 1992. The subsequent five (5)
year awards are increased at a level the committee feels is comparable with years of service. The
Employee Recognition Committee presented, and the City Commission informally agreed to the
following:
5 years of service $ 15.00
10 years of service $ 25.00
15 years of service $ 3 5.00
20 years of service $ 50.00
25 yeaxs of service $ 75.00
30 years of service
(and over) $150.00
Any employee that terminates their employment with the City and is re-hired at a later date, is
awarded for the most recent hire date and;
WHEREAS, any employee that is retiring should be included in the appreciation events
and recognized verbally for the number of years of service by the Employee Appreciation
Committee. The employee's retirement recognition is given by the department at the time of
actual retirement. No plaque or money is given by the Employee Appreciation Committee even if
the retiree's 5 year consecutive anniversary falls within that year unless the employee is cunently
and continuously employed by the City at the time of the recognition event and;
WHEREAS, part-time employees classified as"permanent" will be recognized the same as
full-time employees. Part-time employees who work year around, are paid 12 months of the year,
and are not classified as permanent should be included in recognition events. They should be
recognized verbally for number of years service. They do not receive a plaque or Brookings
Bucks. If an employee is part-time turn full-time, they will receive their award for number of
years full-time only and;
. <
WIREAS, Volunteer Fire Fighters and Police Reserves should be recognized the same
as full time paid employees for number of years of service. This should be paid by the Employee
Appreciation Committee. Retirement for the volunteers should,be handled by the head of his/her
department at actual time of retirement but they should be included in the appreciation events and
recognized verbally.
BE IT RESOLVED that the Brookings City Commission hereby approves the above
guidelines.
