HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 85-1997 RESOLUTION NO. 85-97 RESOLUTION APPROVING SAFETY GLASSES/EYE PROTECTION POLICY WHEREAS the City Commission of the City of Brookings has adopted a safety policy statement within the Safety Committee Bylaws to provide for the safest possible working conditions for its employees; and WHEREAS within the safety policy statement,the City recognizes its need and responsibility for the safety of its employees and considers accident prevention and safe and healthful working conditions integral parts of an efficient and well run organization; and WHEREAS the City of Brookings employees do perform work in areas where there is a reasonable probability of injury to the eye that can be prevented by the use of protective eye equipment; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,that the attached Safety Glasses/Eye Protection Policy be adopted and included within the City Personnel Policy. In General: The Eye Protection/Safety Glasses Program is designed to provide for the proper eye protection for employees who perform work in areas where there is a reasonable probability of injury to the eye. Requirements: Employees shall be required to wear protective eyewear when working in environments, as identified by departmental policy,where there is a reasonable probability of injury to the eye that can be prevented by the use of protective eye equipment. Suitable eye protection shall be provided to the employee when machines or operations present hazardous flying objects, glare, liquids, injurious radiation, or a combination of these hazards. Failure to comply with this requirement is grounds for disciplinary action. Departments are responsible to provide appropriate eye protection (safety glasses, goggles,shields, etc.) which meet OSHA/ANSI standards to their employees. If eye protection is lost or damaged due to an employees' negligence, the employee will be responsible for the cost of replacement. For those employees who wear prescription eyewear who pertorm jobs, duties, or tasks as described above, a program has been established in which those employees may request through their supervisor prescription safety glasses. Prescription safety glasses shall meet the ANSI Z87 standards which include permanently mounted side shields. Employees _ may make their choice of frames from frames which meet this ANSI standard. The maximum allowable charges that the City will be responsible for in the purchase of this prescription safety eyewear are as follows: Single vision lens 8�frames: Maximum $80 Bifocal lens 8� frames: Maximum$100 Trifocal lens 8�frames: Maximum $110 Progressive or other special need lens 8� frames: Maximum $150 The City will assume only the cost of the glasses. Any testing or eye examinations associated with the glasses will be at the expense of the employee. Employees are eligible for a replacement set of prescription safety glasses once every 12 months, but only in circumstances in which a change is needed due to a prescription change. City of Brookings/SAFETY GLASSES/EYE PROTECTION � Policy Page 1 Responsibilit�r: Department heads and supervisors will be responsible for designating the jobs, duties, and tasks that require protective eyewear in order to be pertormed. The departments are responsible for payment of the cost for purchase of prescription safety eyewear as noted within this policy. All safety eyewear shall meet ANSI Z87 standards. Employees shall strictly comply with the directives of this policy and applicable departmental standard operating procedures and will effectively maintain the protective eyewear provided them. In the event that the eye protection is lost or damaged due to an employee's negligence, the employee will be responsible for the cost of the replacement. In the event a replacement is required due to wear, upon departmental approval, the equipment will be replaced as indicated within this policy. At least every five years, a review of the adequacy of the maximum allowable charges for prescription safety eyewear will be performed by the City.
