A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING AN AD HOC COMMITTEE TO STUDY THE
IMPACT OF THE RAILROAD ON BROOKINGS IN THE 21ST CENTURY
WHEREAS, on January 27, 1998 the City of Brookings voted to table action on a
resolution of support for the Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern Railroad expansion project, and
WHEREAS, in response to citizens concerns the City of Brookings determined that more
information is needed regarding this matter and forms an Ad Hoc Committee of Brookings
citizens to study the impact of the railway service on Brookings in the 21 St Century, and
WHEREAS, the Committee shall evaluate issues involving the impact of the railroad.
Committee research may include site visit(s)to other communities, and
WHEREAS, the Committee shall consist of nine (9)members to include property owners
adjacent to the railroad tracks and representatives from industry,business, real estate and general
citizenry. An effort shall be made to maintain a balance of individuals for, against and neutral on
the issue, and
WHEREAS, liaisons to the Committee shall include the Public Safety Commissioner,
Traffic Safety Committee representative(s), the City Engineer, Dakota, Minnesota and Eastern
representative(s), and the Economic Development Director, and
WHEREAS, the City Commission recognizes that the Traffic Safety Committee has
formed a subcommittee to study and evaluate issues pertaining to safety,which may include
police, fire and ambulance service, traffic congestion,noise, speed and children crossing. Upon
completion of their study, the Traffic Safety Committee shall report their findings to the Public
Safety Commissioner, and
The Committee shall present their recommendations to the City Commission upon
completion of their review of the issues, at which time said Ad Hoc Committee shall be
dissolved.
