HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution 13-2001 Resolution No. 13-01 Adoption of a Community-Based Historic Preservation Plan WHEREAS, the City of Brookings has determined that the historical, architectural, archaeological, and cultural heritage of this community are among its most important assets; and WHEREAS, the City of Brookings created a Historic Preservation Commission in 1985 to promote the inspiration, pleasure, and enrichment of the citizens of this city and to preserve, promote, and develop the historical resources; and WHEREAS, in 1997 and 1998 the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission invited Brookings citizens to represent the community at-large in two Town Meetings to identify sources of community pride, and develop strategies to enhance assets, and lessen liabilities; and WHEREAS, as a result of the community-based planning process, the Brookings Historic Preservation Commission developed a Historic Preservation Plan that would establish priorities before issues arise, efficiently and logically make use of volunteer time and city funds, expedite decision making and would listen attentively to citizens without speculation about gassroots opinions; and WHEREAS, a Historic Preservation Plan is a proactive means of planning for a community's unique character and historic resources. A preservation plan works like a map which allows for multiple ways of reaching a shared community development destination. It describes why preservation is important to the community, and identifies those elements of the built and natural environment, which merit preservation, promotion and protection. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Brookings hereby adopts the Brookings Historic Preservation Plan as a guide to help protect, promote and develop our historic resources.
