HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance 10-1984 , '. ! . � _ • ORDINANCE N0. 10-84 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 14-18 OF THE REVISED ORDINANCES OF BROOKINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA, PERTAINING TO THE FIRE CHIEF AND HIS DUTIES. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE GOVERNING BODY OF THE CITY OF BROOKINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA, THAT SECTION 14-18 OF THE REVISED ORDINANCES OF BROOKINGS, SOUTH DAKOTA, BE AND THE SAME IS HEREBY AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS, TO-WIT: Section 14-18. The full time chief shall be the execu- tive head of the fire department and shall serve as the fire marshal for the City. He shall be appointed by the City Commission. The fire chief shall also be the head of the bureau of fire prevention of the city and shall have full authority to execute all laws, ordinances and rules relating to fire prevention, fire fighting and the fire department of the city. He shall be responsible for the training and discipline of inembers of the department and for the organi- zation thereof as an effective fire fighting unit; he shall keep records of all fires and fire calls, determine the cause of all fires and report the same monthly in writing to the police and fire commissioner; he shall be responsible for compliance by the fire department and members thereof with all the laws , ordinances and rules established by the city commission and for directions received from the police and fire commissioner relating to the fire department. The fire chief shall be selected based on his training, experience, executive and administrative qualifications and overall merit and fitness . The choice of a fire chief shall not be limited to inhabitants of the city or the state but he shall be a citizen of the United States . If the qualifi- cations of the candidates for the position of fire chief are equal, the city commission shall give a preference to appli- cants who have served on the City of Brookings Fire Department .
