A meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. at
Brookings City & County Government Center with the following board members present: Brittany
Kleinsasser, Kristi Larsen, Jay Larsen, Steve Berseth, Erika Saunders and Doug Smith. Others present
included: Darren Hoff (Recreation Manager), Stacy Claussen (Recreation Manager), Dan Brettschneider
(Parks, Recreation & Forestry Director) and Christi Weidemann (Office Manager).
1. Call Meeting to Order. Kleinsasser called the meeting to order at 5:32 p.m.
2. Approval of Minutes. Approval of the March Park Board Meeting Minutes. Berseth made the
motion to approve the meeting minutes. Motion was 2nd by Smith. All present voted yes;
motion carried.
3. Additions to and Approval of Agenda. Add item 4 a. as Recreation Trails Program Grant.
Approval of the April Park Board Agenda with addition of 4 a. K. Larsen made the motion to
approve the meeting agenda. Motion was 2nd by J. Larsen. All present voted yes; motion
carried.
4. Staff Highlights. Brettschneider reported on staff highlights report for March.
a. Brettschneider gave a summary of the Recreational Trails Grant Program offered
through South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. Staff submitted a grant
application requesting potential grant funds to overlay approximately 2.5 miles of the
Allyn Frerichs trail system in 2018. An endorsement from the Parks and Recreation
Board showing support of the grant application submittal will strengthen the
application. Doug Smith made the motion to approve grant submittal. Motion was 2nd
by K. Larsen. All present voted yes; motion carried.
5. Arbor Day Events. Arbor Day is April 28th. An Arbor Day flyer was sent to board members prior
to the meeting for informational purposes.
6. Volunteer Recognition Event May 4th. All board members received invitations to join the
Mayor for an Appreciation Reception for their services to the City. Event will be held May 4th at
McCrory Gardens.
7. Upcoming Programs and Events. A monthly “What’s Going On” flyer was sent to board
members prior to the meeting for informational purposes.
8. Adjourn. Kleinsasser adjourned.
Next Meeting Scheduled for Monday, June 5th at 5:30 pm at The City County Government Center,
Community Room 300.
