BOARD OF TRUSTEES
February 11, 2016
MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.
in the Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library
MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Gengler, Janell Hoffelt, Larry Rogers, Kyle Schaefer, Deb Waltman
OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Alice Hayes, Cathy Enlow, Jeff Weldon, Priscilla Pulscher
Call to Order
Larry Rogers called the meeting to order.
Approval of Agenda
Larry Rogers called for approval of the meeting agenda. Janell Hoffelt moved to approve the meeting
agenda. Kyle Schaefer seconded. Motion carried.
Approval of Minutes
Larry Rogers called for approval of the minutes from the January 14, 2016 meeting. Kyle Schaefer
requested that the minutes reflect that he noted a conflict of interest and abstained from voting on the
matter of the Festival of the Book activities. Bill Gengler moved to approve the minutes as amended.
Deb Waltman seconded. Motion carried.
New Business
Approval of January Bills
Interim Director Nita Gill provided on overview of the January bills. Janell Hoffelt moved to approve the
January list of bills. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried.
Annual Report to the Library Board
Nita Gill presented the annual report, which was prepared by Elvita Landau prior to Elvita’s retirement.
Janell Hoffelt moved to approve the annual report. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried.
Other Items and Reports
Financial Reports
Nita Gill noted that the Library will be having a new telephone system installed in the near future. The
bill for that will be forthcoming in the next couple of months.
Librarian’s Report
Interim Director Nita Gill presented her monthly report to the Board.
Recommendation for Hiring of the Director of Library Services
City Manager Jeff Weldon requested the Board’s ratification of the decision to hire Ashia Gustafson as
the Director of Library Services. Jeff shared information about Ashia’s credentials and the search
committee’s activities. The search committee included City Manager Jeff Weldon, Human Resources
Director Donna Langland, Library Board of Trustees member Larry Rogers, and Briggs Library Director
Kristi Tournquist. Ashia is prepared to start work on March 1, 2016. Kyle Schaefer moved to accept the
search committee’s recommendation to hire Ashia Gustafson. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried.
Jeff noted that Ashia will be subject to a six-month probationary period. Jeff also requested that Library
staff be thinking about an orientation and training program for Ashia upon her arrival.
Bill Gengler moved to adjourn the meeting. Kyle Schaefer seconded. Motion carried. The meeting was
adjourned at 6:39 p.m.
