He explained transportation is a crucial aspect of any city. The Charter for this committee is only two pages; Mayor Reed wanted to leave the interpretation open to the committee. He instructed the members to focus on financial sustainability and use the knowledge of the city staff as their experts. The committee will abide by the open meeting policy and should receive input from the whole community. Review of the Committee Charter, discussion of scope of work. Chair Corbett made the suggestion that Daryl Englund would make a valuable Vice-Chair with his wealth of knowledge and experience in Brookings. A motion was made by Hill, seconded by Morgan, to appoint Daryl Englund as the Vice-Chair. All present voted yes, motion carried. Weldon provided a brief overview of the current transportation projects (Highway 14B & Roundabouts; 6th Street from 22nd Avenue to 34th Avenue; 6th Street Main Avenue to Medary Avenue; 34th Avenue and 20th Street; and the State’s offer to take control of 6th Street). He explained that Transportation Secretary Darin Bergquist is interested to receive input from this committee. South Dakota Department of Transportation (SD DOT) Region Engineer Jeff Senst has offered to be available to attend the committee meetings. The committee directed Weldon to take him up on the offer and check his availability for the next meeting. Weldon advised the Chamber of Commerce is organizing a Highway 14 Truck Bypass – Proposed Roundabout Schedule presentation by the SD DOT on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 12:00 – 1:30 pm at the Brookings Government Center, 3rd Floor Chambers. All Transportation Steering Committee members are encouraged to attend. Jeff Senst will be at the meeting.
