HomeMy WebLinkAboutBBACMinutes_2017_02_16Bicycle Advisory Committee February 16, 2017 Minutes A meeting of the Bicycle Advisory Committee was held on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 3:00 pm at Brookings City & County Government Center with the following members present: Vice Chair Joanie Holm, Chair Mike Lockrem (by phone), Eric Rasmussen, Steve Paula, Jennifer McLaughlin, Caleb Evenson, Emily Braun, Brittany Kleinsasser, and Liaison Steve Berseth. Absent: Keith Schram. Guests included Jessica Andrews, Jay Larsen, Sherry Cappel, Police Chief Jeff Miller, City Clerk Shari Thornes, Parks & Recreation Director Dan Brettschneider, City Engineer Jackie Lanning, Assistant to the City Manager Kevin Catlin, Recreation Manager Darren Hoff and Communications Specialist Laurie Carruthers. Vice Chair Holm called the meeting to order at 3:02 p.m. A motion was made by McLaughlin, seconded by Braun to approve the January 26, 2017 minutes. All present voted yes; motion carried. Schedule next meeting. A standardized meeting schedule was set for the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 4:00 pm. Bicycle Master Plan. A motion was made by McLaughlin, seconded by Braun to approve and strongly recommend the Brookings City Council adopt the Bicycle Master Plan dated February 2017 with the intent that Brookings becomes a high-ranking bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists. All present voted yes; motion carried. Public Education & Encouragement Subcommittee. Braun, Kleinsasser and McLaughlin are currently on subcommittee. Additional volunteers are needed. Outside partners, organizations and volunteers are welcome to join. Kleinsasser requested the Bike Rodeo on June 2 be added to the calendar of events. Many things need to fall into place in order to celebrate a successful Bike Month in May. Kleinsasser requested save the date announcements for the events. The BBAC will host a booth with possible interactive activities at the Kite & Bike Festival on June 24 & 25. The Mayor’s Ride is tentatively scheduled at the end of August or beginning of September to coordinate with Downtown at Sundown. The Bicycle Friendly Community Designation could tie in with this event. Braun will send an email to the committee advising the subcommittee meeting dates. After the 2017 goals have been adopted, the Public Education & Encouragement Subcommittee will meet to plan the calendar of events for the remainder of 2017. If you are interested in serving on the Public Education & Encouragement Subcommittee, please contact Braun. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar. McLaughlin provided an update regarding the Earth Day event from 10-12pm on April 22 at Dakota Nature Park. The focus is pollinators. She is working with greenhouses, as well as coordinating other activities. The first PlacesForBikes Conference will be in Madison, WI on June 28-30, 2017. National Bike Summit is March 5-8 in Washington DC and Jessica Andrews received scholarship to attend. She will provide a report to the BBAC. Meeting adjourned at 3:32 pm.
