City Hall meeting room
Thursday, January 10, 2008
12:10 p.m.
The Brookings Traffic Safety Committee held its monthly meeting on Thursday, January 10, 2008, at
12:10pm in the City Hall meeting room.
Members Present: Louis Skubic, Skip Webster, Matthew Nelson, Becky Thompson, Jackie Lanning,
Keith Bruinsma, Brian Gums, Connie Bridges
Call to Order: Skip called the meeting called to order. Louis/Jackie moved to approve minutes of
the December 12th meeting. All present voted aye. Motion carried.
Addition to Agenda:

New Business:
1) Request for speed limit sign changed on Main Ave. So. Current ordinance states speed limit is 35 mph
from South Main to South city limits. The first step would be to move the 35 mph sign south 400 feet, since
the city owns both sides of the road up to 400 ft. Skip said if we move the speed limit sign south 400 ft. we
will have to move the reduced speed limit sign south also. Jackie said that it is stated in the manual that
there is a certain number of feet that is between the signs. Jackie made a motion to move the Speed limit
sign to the south edge of the city limits. All present voted aye. Motion carried.
2) Request to remove parking on one side of Torrey Pines and Blue Gill streets.
Torrey Pines – Louis/Connie made a motion to remove parking from one side of the street from 17th
Ave to Doral Dr. and invite the neighbors to next month’s meeting to decide what side of the street the
parking will be removed from. All present voted aye. Motion carried. Jackie will draft a letter to all
the neighbors and invite them to next month’s meeting.
Blue Gill Ave – Louis made a motion to remove parking from one side of the street of Blue Gill Ave.,
north of 22nd St. So. to the north side of the cul-de-sac and invite the neighbors to next month’s meeting
to decide what side of the street the parking will be removed from. All present voted aye. Motion
carried. Jackie will draft a letter to all the neighbors and invite them to next month’s meeting.
3) Election of officers
Nominations for President. Skip Webster nominated Brad Whaley and Daryl Englund. Jackie
2nd the motion for Daryl. Motion was made for Daryl Englund for President. All present voted
aye. Motion carried.
Nominations for Vice President. Becky Thompson nominated Brad Whaley. Skip Webster 2nd
the motion. Jackie nominated Skip Webster. Connie Bridges 2nd the motion. By a vote of 4-2
Skip Webster is the new Vice President. All present voted aye. Motion carried.
Additions to Agenda:
Member Reports
1) A letter from a concerned citizen that complained of the safety/line of sight issue at the
intersection of 7th St. and 14th Ave.
2) DOT has done their study on 6th St. over by 32nd Ave and the off ramps. The off ramp on
the east side of the interstate has met the warrant for a signal as well as 32nd Ave.
3) The planning commission voted on the B-1 drive in food service. The vote failed by 4-4.
The planning commission will have two meetings the 2nd meeting will be on Feb. 12th.
Jackie will give us an update at next month’s meeting.
4) The city is putting in 4 new stop signs at the Swiftel Center. On the service roads near 32nd
and 34th St. on the south side of Swiftel and between the Ice arena and Swiftel.
The next meeting will be February 14, 2008. Meeting adjourned.
