August 13, 2012
A meeting of the Sustainability Council was held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 13, 2012 at Brookings
City & County Government Center with the following members present: Arika Sanders, Norma Nusz
Chandler, Donna Hess, Bob McGrath and Jane Hegland. Absent: Ryan Carda and Brooke Sydow. Shari
Thornes and Laurie Carruthers were also present.
Sanders called the meeting to order at 5:06 p.m.
A motion was made by Hess, seconded by McGrath, to approve the agenda. All present voted yes;
motion carried. A motion was made by McGrath, seconded by Hegland, to approve the July 23, 2012
minutes. All present voted yes; motion carried.
A discussion was conducted about the September meeting and all agreed upon September 20, 2012 at
8:30 a.m. and would be finished by 10:00 a.m.
Old Business/Updates/Reports
Sustainability Guide.
A thorough review of the Sustainability Guide was performed for finalizing for posting on the website.
Sanders will update the Guide with revisions and Carruthers will post the final version to the website.
Sustainability Indicators.
Nusz Chandler updated the Council on her proposal to assist the City and Sustainability Council in the
development of sustainable indicators/goals as a class project. Nusz Chandler will utilized the indicators
used by other cities and present them to the Council. The Council will identify the focus indicators for
performance measurement for Brookings. The indicators will then be presented to the City department
heads to assist in measuring the impact. The established goals will encourage green evolution
throughout the community and allow changes to be monitored.
Marketing strategy discussion.
Sanders updated the Council on the marketing proposal using the slogan, “Mayor Reed does it one bulb
at a time.” Sanders will check with local photographers to see if they would be willing to photograph
the ads and request quotes from the local printers.
Board Development.
Nusz Chandler will be attending the Growing Sustainable Communities Conference in Dubuque, IA.
McGrath, Hess, Sanders, Thornes and Carruthers will be attending the Plain Green Conference in Sioux Falls.
Motion was made by Nusz Chandler, seconded by McGrath to adjourn at 7:10 PM. All voted yes, motion
carried.
