A meeting of the Sustainability Council was held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 25, 2012 at Brookings
Public Library with the following members present: Arika Sanders, Norma Nusz Chandler, Donna Hess,
Brooke Sydow and Ryan Carda. Absent: Justin Fjeldos, Jane Hegland and Bob McGrath. Linda Wilson
from Dakota Rural Action, Shari Thornes and Laurie Carruthers were also present.
Sanders called the meeting to order at 5:07 p.m.
A motion was made by Hess, seconded by Sydow, to approve the agenda. All present voted yes; motion
carried. A motion was made by Carda, seconded by Hess, to approve the April 23, 2012 minutes. All
present voted yes; motion carried.
New Business
Compressed natural gas criteria data.
The Council identified the following criteria for analyzing the benefits of compressed natural gas:
• Cost for conversion kits (cars vs. garbage trucks)
• Speed tests (patrol cars)
• Heat content
• Fuel mileage
• Fueling times
• Are any other entities participating (County, SDSU, etc.)
The Council agreed more information was needed from Justin Hyde. Carruthers will contact Hyde.
Letter of support for the Solid Waste Management Program to the SD Department of Environment &
Natural Resources
A motion was made by Sydow, seconded by Nusz Chandler, to approve Chairperson Sanders to sign
letter. All present voted yes; motion carried.
Old Business/Updates/Reports
Sustainability Guide update.
The Council reviewed the guide and made notes on revisions. The goal is to finalize the guide at the July
23 meeting and post it to the website prior to the City Council budget hearings. Carruthers will send it
out to all members and ask for revisions within one week. Sanders will finalize and present at the next
meeting for final review.
Linda Wilson from Dakota Rural Action introduced herself. She offered any help on collaboration with
Dakota Rural Action or Earth Day activities.
Thornes attended the International Institute of Municipal Clerks Conference in Portland, Oregon in
June. She received several contacts and information on sustainability and will share the information
with Carruthers to be used as needed.
Motion was made by Hess, seconded by Sydow to adjourn at 5:50 PM. All voted yes, motion carried.
