A meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was held on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.
at Larson Nature Center with the following board members present: Brittany Kleinsasser, Erika
Saunders, Steve Berseth, Sean Binker, Kristi Larsen, and Jay Larsen. Others present included: Darren Hoff
(Recreation Manager), Al Kruse (Parks & Forestry Superintendent), Dan Brettschneider (Parks,
Recreation & Forestry Director) and Christi Weidemann (Office Manager).
1. Call Meeting to Order. Kleinsasser called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m.
2. Introduction of New Park & Recreation Board Members. Beau Bordewyk was absent.
3. Approval of Minutes. Approval of the June Park Board Meeting Minutes. Berseth made the
motion to approve the meeting minutes. Motion was 2nd by Jay Larsen. All present voted yes;
motion carried.
4. Additions to and Approval of Agenda. Approval of the August Park Board Agenda. J. Larsen
made the motion to approve the meeting agenda. Motion was 2nd by Berseth. All present voted
yes; motion carried.
5. Staff Highlights. Brettschneider reported that going forward he will be presenting staff
highlights instead of staff reports. These reports will be sent out to board members with the
meeting agenda for review prior to the meeting.
6. Park & Recreation Board and City Council Park Potential Tour Locations. Brettschneider
reported that the date choices are September 19th or early October. Tour Locations to be:
EdgeBrook, Trail Systems depending on overlay status, Indian Hills Playground, Raised Garden
Beds, Dog Park, Dakota Nature Park Boat House and Hillcrest Aquatic Center.
7. Comprehensive Master Plan Advisory Committee Video Request. The Comprehensive Master
Plan Advisory Committee is requesting a video from the Park Board to give them a broader
picture for Brookings. Park Board members were asked to send their input electronically to
Brettschneider. The video will feature Brettschneider and Kleinsasser at various parks and
facilities throughout the community discussing the parks system.
8. Discussion on the Role of the Parks & Recreation Board. The Parks & Recreation Board is an
advisory committee. Recommendations are made to City staff and City Council. The Board
assists in projects and helps find strategic plans for the future of Brookings parks and facilities.
9. Updates on various City Committees. Kleinsasser gave an update on the Bike Committee. The
Mayors Ride will be held on Thursday, August 18th at 5pm and will include a 2-mile loop and a
10-mile loop.
10. Upcoming Programs and Events. A monthly “What’s Going On” brochure will go out to the
board prior to meetings for informational purposes.
11. Adjourn. Kleinsasser adjourned.

Next Meeting Scheduled for Monday, November 7th at 5:30 pm.
