A meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board was held on Monday, December 7, 2015 at 5:30
p.m. at Brookings City & County Government Center with the following board members present: Trent
Sorbe, Brian Brunner, Steve Berseth, Erika Saunders and Beau Bordewyk. Others present included:
Mitch Pederson (Recreation Manager), Darren Hoff (Recreation Manager) and Al Kruse (Parks & Forestry
Superintendent).
1. Call Meeting to Order. Trent Sorbe called the meeting to order at 5:35 p.m.
2. Approval of Minutes. Approval of the October 26th Park Board Meeting Minutes. Sorbe made
the motion to approve the October 26th meeting minutes. Motion was 2nd by Berseth. All
present voted yes; motion carried.
3. Staff Reports. Kruse reported on volleyball courts installations at Camelot, Hillcrest, and the
reconstruct of the Pioneer park court. Playground ordered for Indian Hills Park. Christmas lights
are up around town. Vandalism at the Hillcrest pool and tennis courts will not meet the $5,000
deductible limit. Hoff reported snowflake skate great turnout at Larson Ice Center. Brunner
asked what the contract looks like with the Brookings Blizzard, Hoff responded that contract is
on a year to year basis, and they pay per hour based on games or practice.
4. EdgeBrook Golf Course Final Report. Clubhouse Manager Gary Moen was not present to report
on the 2015 budget numbers. Hoff stated that he is working with Moen to clarify a few report
details.
5. Final Summer Activities Report. Hoff reported the golf First Tee program was a huge success for
a new program introduced in 2015. All other programs were comparable to the previous years.
Hoff reported that nothing in regards to Recreation was out of line compared to previous years.
6. Review Larson Nature Center Rental Agreement. Pederson presented the Larson Nature Center
building rental agreement. The board suggested a few more corrections and work on an hourly
rate for commercial and non-profit groups.
7. Bike Friendly Brookings. Hoff stated he is on the Bike friendly committee. Hoff informed the
board that the committee has been formed and looking at increasing routes and lanes within
the community. Further information will follow as the committee forms ideas and plans.
8. Adjourn. Sorbe made the motion to adjourn the meeting at approximately 6:30p.m. Motion was
2nd by Berseth. All present voted yes; motion carried.
Next scheduled meeting. Monday, January 4, 2016 at 5:30 pm.
