BOARD OF TRUSTEES
May 14, 2013
MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. in the
Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library
MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Gengler, Mac Harris, Janel Hoffelt, Larry Rogers and Gloria Thvedt
OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Alice Hayes and Cathy Enlow
President Mac Harris called for approval of the meeting agenda. Larry Rogers moved to approve the
agenda with the addition. Janel Hoffelt seconded. Motion carried.
Mac Harris called for approval of the minutes from the April 9, 2013 meeting. Gloria Thvedt moved to
approve the minutes. Larry Rogers seconded. Motion carried.
Bills and Salaries:
Elvita Landau pointed out the charge from Tschetter Electric for replacing ballasts in the light fixtures,
which is being done in increments. Janel Hoffelt moved to approve the list of bills. Bill Gengler
seconded. Motion carried.
Financial Report:
Two bills were processed in April from Brookings Municipal Utilities, which began a new billing system
earlier this year.
Elvita Landau advised that there would be two large bills coming due in the future; in May there would
be a bill for magazine subscriptions about $5,000. In June, there will be a bill from SDLN for $33,820
The largest expenditures in the April Fines Account budget were for the Library’s 100th Anniversary
Celebration.
Librarian’s Report:
Circulation is up a little.
Patrons have found the Tumblebooks collection again after the change in location on our website.
Axis 160 will be going online soon.
The Mango Tree rental payment for April was $140.38.
The Library received a letter and certificate of appreciation from NASA.
Meeting Room Use Request:
The Library has received a request from the US Postal Service for use of a meeting room on May 21. This
will be for an open meeting to promote a service that businesses will pay for. Larry Rogers moved to
approve the request. Janel Hoffelt seconded. Motion carried.
Preliminary 2014 Budget Discussion:
Elvita Landau explained the proposed budget to the Library Board. The proposed budget does not need
to be approved until June. Elvita will continue to look into a less expensive alternative to the Mango
Languages program.
Brookings County Budget Request:
Elvita Landau presented the budget request that will be going to Brookings County. After discussion,
Larry Rogers moved to approve the request. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried.
Policy Review: Unattended Children:
Elvita Landau presented the policy for review. Gloria Thvedt suggested that the policy be posted in the
Library, perhaps in the children’s play area. Gloria Thvedt moved to approve the policy. Larry Rogers
seconded. Motion carried.
The next Library Board meeting will be on Tuesday, June 11.
The meeting adjourned at 6:08 p.m.
