BOARD OF TRUSTEES
AUGUST 14, 2012
MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met Tuesday, August 14, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.
in the Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Gengler, Janell Hoffelt, Larry Rogers, and Gloria Thvedt
OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Cathy Enlow, and Peg Whalen
Vice-chair Larry Rogers called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Gloria Thvedt moved to accept
the agenda as presented. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion approved.
Bill Gengler moved to approve the minutes from the July 10, 2012 meeting. Janell Hoffelt
seconded. Motion carried.
BILL AND SALARIES – The Board reviewed the August 2012 bills. Bill Gengler moved to pay all
bills and salaries. Janell Hoffelt seconded. Motion approved.
FINANCIAL REPORT – The Board examined the monthly financial report from the City Finance
Office. The line items that may go over budget are building and equipment maintenance, and travel.
LIBRARIAN’S REPORT – Items of note are:
• The Library has been selected as one of 50 libraries/museums to host the Civil War 150 traveling
exhibit. It is scheduled for Brookings in February 2014.
• “Earth as Art Three”, a traveling exhibit from NASA, is currently on display at the library.
Currently the only other venue for this exhibit is the Library of Congress.
• 1603 children signed up for our Summer Reading Program which means Katherine will have
seven colors in her hair soon. All children’s programs have finished for the summer.
• The library will participate in the Backpack event and the SDSU Fall Festival.
• The Friends fall book sale is scheduled for September 21-23.
OUT-OF-STATE TRAVEL REQUESTs – Elvita requested permission to travel to MPLA in Omaha
October 17-19. The second request is for two staff members to attend a “Back in Circulation”
conference in Madison WI on October 15-16. Gloria Thvedt made a motion to approve the two out of
state travel requests. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried.
POLICY REVIEW – CONFIDENTIALITY OF LIBRARY RECORDS – no changes were proposed. Bill
Gengler moved to affirm the current policy. Gloria Thvedt seconded. Motion approved.
Larry Rogers declared the Board would go into Executive Session for the annual review of the
Library Director.
Larry Rogers moved to exit executive session. Seconded by Bill Gengler. The meeting was
adjourned at 7:03 pm.
