HomeMy WebLinkAboutLBMinutes_2012_04_10BROOKINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES APRIL 10, 2012 MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. in the Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library. MEMBERS PRESENT: Bill Gengler, Mac Harris, Janell Hoffelt, Larry Rogers, and Gloria Thvedt OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Cathy Enlow, Peg Whalen, and Lawrence Novotny Chair Mac Harris called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Bill Gengler moved to accept the agenda as presented. Janell Hoffelt seconded. Motion approved. Larry Rogers moved to approve the minutes of the March 20, 2012 meeting. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried. BILLS AND SALARIES – The Board reviewed the April bills. Larry Rogers moved to pay all bills and salaries. Janell Hoffelt seconded. Motion approved. FINANCIAL REPORT – The Board reviewed the current budget report from the City Finance Office. Most line items are in order. LIBRARIAN’S REPORT – Items of note are: • National Library Week is April 8-14. In addition to the Red Throated League radio show in the Life Explored series, the library is working with the Briggs Library on two events about Oscar Micheaux. • The Illustrate a Book contest had 120 entries. Awards will be presented on April 14 at 2 p.m. • A training session for Library Trustees will be held May 3rd in Watertown or May 4th in Sioux Falls. • SDLN received six proposals for an integrated library system. • The Friends of the Library Board voted to fund materials and programming for a total of $14,255. OCCUPY BROOKINGS DISCUSSION – Lawrence Novotny of the Occupy Brookings movement gave details on what their group has been doing in the Brookings Community. Novotny suggested that if the library needed support in some way the group would be pleased to help. Following discussion the Board decided to keep their proposal in mind and will contact them if needed. DISCUSSION OF ISSUES FOR THE CITY VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP COFFEE WITH THE MAYOR – the Mayor is holding two coffees for the chairs and vice-chairs (Mac Harris and Larry Rogers) of the various city boards to discuss issues pertinent to each entity. TRUSTEE TRAINING SESSIONS IN MAY – The South Dakota State Library is sponsoring workshops for Library Trustees in East River. Sessions are in Watertown or Sioux Falls. Plans were made for those who can attend to go to the session in Watertown on Thursday, May 3. POLICY REVIEW – CIRCULATION POLICY – The Board reviewed and updated portions of the Circulation policy to reflect procedures, materials, and costs currently in use. Janell Hoffelt made a motion to accept the changes as presented. Bill Gengler seconded. Motion carried.
