HomeMy WebLinkAboutLBMinutes_2011_04_12BROOKINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES APRIL 12, 2011 MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 5:30 p.m. in the Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library. MEMBERS PRESENT: Mac Harris, Amber Peper, Larry Rogers, and Gloria Thvedt. OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Cathy Enlow, and Peg Whalen Chair Larry Rogers called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Gloria Thvedt moved to accept the agenda as presented. Mac Harris seconded. Motion carried. Gloria Thvedt moved and Mac Harris seconded to approve the minutes from the March 15, 2011 meeting. Motion approved. BILLS AND SALARIES – Amber Peper moved to pay all bills and salaries. Mac Harris seconded. Motion carried. FINANCIAL REPORT – Elvita presented the financial report from the city Finance Office. LIBRARIAN’S REPORT - Items of note are: • Circulation statistics were up compared to 2010. • The final program in the A Life Explored series is historic re-enactor, Anne Hawkins, who will present as Louisa May Alcott. • There will be two musical programs presented in May – Bhargav Mistry playing the musical instrument called a sarod, and Judy Cook presenting a musical program based on Civil War letters. • There were 219 entries in the Illustrate-a-Book contest. • The Summer Reading Program theme is “One World, Many Stories.” • SD Titles to Go went live on March 28th. Two classes on how to use this service will be done in April. • The Friends of the Library selected programs, materials and supplies for the library for a total of $7000. • A bronze statue has been donated to the children’s department and will arrive soon. • Interlibrary Loan requests filled through Minitex may become an additional cost since the State Library has decided not to pay the administrative fee for the service. • Cathy Enlow, Tech Services Librarian, and Peg Whalen, Administrative Assistant, described their jobs at the library for the Board. DISCUSSION OF STRATEGIC PLAN GOAL #7 – ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY – Elvita reported to the Board on resources in Brookings that are providing ESL services. Currently the library offers Mango Languages on line, children’s books in Spanish and adult books on learning English. Elvita will continue to look for ways the library can help fulfill this goal. POLICY REVIEW – ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR - Elvita suggested two changes to the policy: adding “or within 20 ft. of any entrance” to part E. ( Smoking in the library building) in the prohibitions and adding “rights” to part H (Excessive noise that infringes on others). Mac Harris motioned to accept the two changes to the Acceptable Behavior Policy. Gloria Thvedt seconded. Motion approved.
