HomeMy WebLinkAboutLBMinutes_2010_04_13BROOKINGS PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES APRIL 13, 2010 MINUTES The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in the Historical Room of the Brookings Public Library. MEMBERS PRESENT: Mac Harris, Amber Ohm, Larry Rogers, and Gloria Thvedt OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Cathy Enlow, and Peg Whalen Chair Larry Rogers called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Gloria Thvedt moved to accept the agenda as presented. Mac Harris seconded. Motion approved. Mac Harris moved approval of the minutes of the March 9, 2010 meeting as presented. Amber Ohm seconded. Motion carried. BILLS AND SALARIES – After reviewing the list of bills, Mac Harris moved to pay all bills and salaries. Gloria Thvedt seconded. Motion carried. FINANCIAL REPORT – The Board reviewed the City Finance Report. One of the areas of concern is the maintenance line item. LIBRARIAN’S REPORT – Items of note are: • The new computer sign up and print software are now working. • The Hands on Partnership exhibit in the children’s activity area is “Termespheres: Up, Down, and All Around.” Artist Dick Termes will speak at the library on April 22 at 7 p.m. • The Summer Reading Program theme is “Make a Splash @ your library”. The programs are all in place and the schedule will be printed in the Park and Rec booklet. • Alison Tappan has taken over as Circulation Manager. Assistant Director Lynn Osika has resigned her position effective July 30, 2010. • The Friends of the Library Board meets this week and will consider items on the Library’s wish list. Among those items are the Mango Languages service and downloadable audio. SUMMER SUNDAY HOURS – A patron brought a suggestion that the Library be open on Sundays in August for consideration of the Board. Since public school starts mid August it was thought that the students might need library facilities for study. Following discussion, Mac Harris moved to leave the hours as is. Amber Ohm seconded. Motion approved. SMALL CLAIMS – Current library policy states that we use small claims to file against a patron if there is over $25 in lost materials. Elvita suggested raising the amount to $50. Following discussion Mac Harris moved to change the policy to having $50 in lost materials before filing a small claims charge. Gloria Thvedt seconded. Motion carried. STRATEGIC PLAN UPDATE – The Board reviewed the long range strategic planning for 2010. Many goals are still in process. POLICY REVIEW: POLICY AND PROCEDURE FOR HANDLING A CITIZEN’S REQUEST FOR RECONSIDERATION OF MATERIALS - Elvita suggested deleting the second paragraph (The complaint form entitled “Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials and Displays” was adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library on September 16, 1999.) Other suggested changes were that “Young Adult Librarian” was added to the list of staff in the 4th paragraph and “materials selection statement” was changed to “materials selection policy” and “by Library Staff” be inserted in first sentence of 5th paragraph to read “The objections and the response by Library Staff” should be given to the Library Director. Gloria Thvedt moved to approve the suggested changes. Amber Ohm seconded. Motion approved.
