BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MARCH 8, 2007
MINUTES
The Board of Trustees of the Brookings Public Library met Thursday,
March 8, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. in Cooper Room A of the Brookings Public Library.
MEMBERS PRESENT: Dave Bordewyk, John Grove, John Kubal,
Carolyn Warmann, and Tami Watson
OTHERS PRESENT: Elvita Landau, Katherine Eberline, Cathy
Enlow and Peg Whalen
Chair John Kubal called the meeting to order at 5:30 p.m. Tami Watson
moved to accept a revised agenda with moving the agenda item “Policy on
Unattended Children” to the beginning of the agenda. Dave Bordewyk
seconded. Motion approved.
John Grove moved approval of the January 11, 2007 minutes. Tami
Watson seconded. Motion carried.
POLICY DISCUSSION: UNATTENDED CHILDREN – Discussion was
held regarding the age at which a child is allowed in the Library unsupervised.
Children’s Librarian Katherine Eberline presented arguments for setting that age
at six and under.
Following discussion, John Kubal moved to strike the word “all” in
paragraph two and replace the age eight with seven in all paragraphs. Dave
Bordewyk seconded. A roll call vote was called. The motion passed five to zero.
BILLS AND SALARIES – After reviewing the list of bills, Dave Bordewyk
moved to pay all bills and salaries. John Kubal seconded. Motion approved.
LIBRARIAN’S REPORT – Items of note are:
• The Library is hosting the statewide premier of “Bug’s Eye View”
beginning March 12th and running to April 6th. So far, more than
600 school children are scheduled to attend the exhibit. The goal is
to have more than 2400 in attendance.
• Elvita attended a PLA symposium on redesign and revitalization of
libraries. She came back with many ideas, which the Board will
discuss when the SDSU Design Class brings in their completed
redesign class project.
• The Friends of the Library Book Sale brought in more than $5600.
The FOL will be sending some of the leftover books to a reseller in
Colorado. FOL will receive a percentage of the money from the
books sold. Other books will go to Goodwill.
• Warren Wilson has been hired as the new Executive Director of the
Library Network.
• Our book drop was damaged by a snowplow during the blizzard
and is unusable.
• The Brookings Public Library has received accreditation from
SDLA.
NEXT MEETING – Thursday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. Elvita will check on
whether Carolyn Warmann, who has moved out of the city, is still eligible to serve
on the Board.
Dave Bordewyk moved to adjourn the meeting. Tami Watson seconded.
Motion approved. The meeting was adjourned at 6:35 p.m.
