Attendance: Lawrence Novotny (recorder), Chandradhar Dwivedi, George Hamer, Judy Karen and
Shafiqur Rahman. Absent: Penny Hauffe (chair), Steve Bayer (vice-chair), Elliot Johnson, Maggie
Owens and Shari Thornes (City Clerk).
Acting chair Hamer called the meeting to order at 8:20 am. Approval of minutes of the November
meeting was postponed to the next meeting.
Judging of the King Contest Entries:
Theme of the poster contest is: “Only love can drive out hatred.”
Theme of the essay contest is: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate
cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
A motion was made by Novotny, seconded by Karen, to award the following winners of the essay contest
with the designated price amount. All present voted yes; motion carried.
Middle School
First place ($100) – Prasoon Kharel, grade 7
Second place ($75) – Aditya Tummala, grade 6
Third place ($50) – Isha Hooda, grade 7
Honorable mention (certificate) – Tristina Ting, grade 6
High School (all entries were from grade 9 honors English class)
First place ($100) – Mariana Du
Second place ($75) – Shannon VanderVliet
Third place ($50) – Brianna Serrett
Honorable mention (certificate) – Jane Ardry
A motion was made by Karen, seconded by Rahman, to award the following winners of the poster contest
with the designated price amount. All present voted yes; motion carried.
Second and Third Grade

Second place ($15) – Brooklyn Bollis, 2nd grade, Hillcrest
Third place ($10) – Ernest Ting, 3rd grade, Hillcrest

Note: No entries were received from kindergarten or first grade.
Poster Display: The posters will be displayed in the windows of downtown businesses including Sioux
River Bicycles & Fitness and the Chamber of Commerce. A member will check with downtown
businesses to see who is willing to display the posters. The posters will be put up on Saturday, January
16. If any posters will be displayed at the Chamber, they will need to be put up during business hours,
Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. City staff will be asked to conduct a doodle poll to solicit volunteers to put
up posters. The posters will be taken down on the Saturday after the City Council meeting awards
presentation. City staff will be asked to conduct a doodle poll to solicit volunteers to take down the
posters and to return them to the schools.
Evaluation of the Contest: A requirement needs to be made for each student to include their name
and grade at the top of their essay. It was suggested that the student, parent or teacher conduct a fact
check of some of the numbers and/or statements made in the essays. The student or teacher should
conduct a grammar and spelling check of the essay before submission.
