HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHRCMinutes_2015_02_09Brookings Human Rights Committee Minutes Monday, February 9, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. Suite 230, Room 241- Brookings City & County Government Center Attendance: Penny Hauffe, Patty Bacon, Steve Bayer, Sam Jennings, Hanna Larsen, Judy Karen, George Hamer, Chandradhar Dwivedi and Lawrence Novotny. Absent: Shafiqur Rahman Also present: City Staff Shari Thornes. Hauffe called the meeting to order at 12:04 pm. A motion was made by Hamer, seconded by Dwivedi, to approve the agenda. All present voted yes; motion carried. Review and action to approve Brookings Human Rights Ordinance revisions. The Committee discussed edits, terminology and clarifications regarding the Ordinance and accepted the explanation of said edits or questions. A motion was made by Novotny, seconded by Hamer, to accept the modifications to the Brookings Human Rights Ordinance as discussed with deference to legal advice on the document structure and mechanics. All present voted yes; motion carried. Announcements. Dear White People will be shown at the University Student Union Market at SDSU on Friday, February 13 at 6pm. Current legislation bills include high school athletics-gender identity and a religious freedom bill, which allows people to express religious freedom, but is understood to have the intent of allowing businesses to refuse service to anyone of a protected class. Adjourn. A motion was made by Dwivedi, seconded by Karen, to adjourn. All present voted yes; motion carried. Meeting adjourned 12:54 p.m. Submitted by Sam Jennings.
