May 16, 2013 Minutes
Brookings City & County Government Center, Community Room #300
1. George Hamer called the meeting to order at 12:04 pm. Present: Hamer, Bacon, Hauffe,
Larsen, Dwivedi, Rahman, Novotny and Jennings. Absent: Hatton and Bayer.
2. Agenda - A motion was made by Dwivedi, seconded by Rahman, to approve. All present
voted yes; motion carried.
3. Approval of minutes – Deferred until June
4. Schedule June meeting date – June 17 at 11:30, July 22 at Noon.
5. Community Common Read Promotion Strategy.
• The author will be here on November 13th.
• Campus plans include a memorial wall, kick off events, photography display, warrior
cross cultures, day/week of service, film series on campus and one downtown. Kick-off
events may be the second week of September.
• Possible BHRC event: Panel of veterans including family members to be held the week
after the campus kick-off.
o Possibly televise the panel via city channel
o Student veteran contact - Dave Auch
o Community veterans - Keith Corbett was suggested
o Panel framework - public education with veterans of different eras
• Publicity about Community Common Read:
o Radio spots
o Ask Library to review book
o Chuck Cecil write a column
o Find tie-in with Diversity Potluck.
o Tie in with Downtown Brookings Buy Local event on July 11 – a booth
• Action list
o Get books for all committee – Thornes
o Larsen will deliver dates from campus dates by next meeting
o Insert book-mark in utility bill – Thornes needs artwork
o Alert Cover- to-Cover that we will be promoting the book so they can stock up
o Distribute campus posters in the community
o Promote through the Chamber
6. Annual Butler Human Rights Award Selection. The press release was in the Brookings
Register. The Committee extended the application deadline to June 17th. Committee
members will email the award application and release to personal email lists. Novotny
suggested Mary Ellen Hoppenen and the Islamic Center in Brookings for promotion of
interfaith dialogue as possible nominees.
7. 2014 Budget Request. Thornes has to submit the budget request by June. She will put in a
request for a 3-5% increase from last year.
8. Rental Housing Issues/Multi-Cultural Center. Hamer will follow up with Steve Hildebrand
and report out at June meeting
