We had some issues with poster putty residue on the stairwell landing, but none anywhere else. We are going to thank the city and county for allowing us to use that space and report out on the response from the community. We were asked to put up the winning posters and essays out in the hallway instead of in the chambers. This was our first time in this building, so we have some kinks to work out. Overall, we felt it was a successful year. The mayor would like to display the winning posters in his office. 7. Community Common Read a. Book Selection Update Larsen and Hauffe attended the meeting and have been reading • The Heart and the Fist – Larsen likes this one and feels we could connect with the veterans on campus and in the community. There is also a junior read to this one. • Wine to Water - Bacon feels this could be read and comprehended by middle schoolers • No Impact Man – Hauffe doesn’t feel this has a diversity aspect • Where am I Wearing? – Looking at the source of his clothing and the labor conditions in those countries and travels those countries. It is entertaining in parts. • A motion was made by Bacon, seconded by Dwivedi, requesting Hauffe recommend Where am I Wearing as the Committee’s first choice and The Heart and the Fist as second, Wine to Water third and No Impact Man is fourth. All present voted yes; motion carried. b. Funding Update: Thornes told us that the committee is authorized to utilize the $5,000 in our budget for the community promotional efforts. Whatever we don’t use, the mayor would like to allocate it to the speaker. c. Community Promotion Plan Discussion; assign subcommittee: if it is No Impact Man it could be promoted at the Earth Day activities. Subcommittee: Larsen, Bacon & Hauffe. 8. Spring Diversity Potluck – April 14th. Hamer, Bacon and Hauffe will do the radio promos. Shari will get them scheduled. Dwivedi has scheduled the Chinese students to present the program. Thornes has been working out the details of the charges to use the facility. 9. Proposed Legislation in 2013 a. SB 109 – Sen. Adelstein submitted the bill and it was killed in committee. 4-5 people testified against it. No one testified in favor. The committee chair asked for an apology from a woman who made inappropriate comments. b. The House amended the bill to change this clause to read “Person of the opposite sex who are or have been living in the same household”. So this would eliminate protection orders for same-sex couples. This amended bill passed the House 52-18. c. George shared an article about Chick-fil-A – things are moving in a good direction 10.
