Call to order:12:03 by George 2. Adoption of the agenda: modification – Ann Marie wants to report on an incident Chandradhar moved, Rebecca seconded to go into Exec Session at the end of the meeting. 3. Approval of minutes: Lawrence moved, Ann Marie seconded. Motion approved. 4. Schedule next meeting: Shari will Doodle for the September meeting 5. State Human Rights Commission Meeting – September 30th - August 30th in Pierre. Lawrence will pursue DDN options so we can attend. Check on approval for travel reimbursement. Lawrence is considering attending. 6. Human Rights Award – September 27th at 5:30 - Ann Marie nomination by Lawrence, second by George, motion passed. Order plaque: Laurie. Lawrence volunteered to interview the winner. Ann Marie will get the University Relations photo for publicity photos. All three groups will be having our event together at BHS on Sept. 27th. Discussed having a program with all three committees: BHRC, Brookings Historic Preservation Committee and Accessibility. Shari and her staff will take care of all publicity issues. Volunteers for setup: Patty, George, Rebecca, Lawrence. Ann Marie will submit her guest list requests to Shari. Music by Murph Monahan and friends. 7. Fall Diversity Potluck Planning – Sunday, October 7th from 5-7 p.m. a. Promotion (Radio Shows, Cross Promote with other organizations, Televised Council meeting, Classrooms, SDSU student announcements): Patty and George will do radio, George will follow up with Jaime to get it on the Diversity Calendar at SDSU. George or Steve will come to City Council meeting on Sept. 25 and formally request their attendance at Diversity Potluck and promote the Human Rights award. b. Program (Formal Welcome, Announcements, Introductions, Printed Program) – Angela volunteered prepare a printed program. c. Interaction Encouragements (greeters, table conversation decks) d. Entertainment: Chandradhar will ask the Indian group this time and then we will put an invitation to other groups to perform the next time. e. Details (set-up, tear-down, catering, donations, other): Committee will consider businesses to approach for paper products and/or a door prize. f. Aramark: do we need to purchase/bring paper supplies? Shari is meeting with them. 8. Select dates for 2013 Diversity Potluck Events: Shari will request April and October dates for us. 9. BHRC Newspaper Column Proposal – report from Angela & Anna Leisa: it would be a good way for us to have a voice in our community. Do “we” (the committee) want to be the authors? Or do we want to open it up to the community? Discussion about opening it up. Shari will check on if we could “sponsor” the column as a committee. Subject matter would be subject/information based, not opinion. We will knock out details at our quarterly work session. Group consensus on concept. Committee write a “our own background from a diversity concept”. Shari will send out a summary of the concept to get a feel for the committee members willingness/ability to write columns a. International Recipes (Submission process, Contributors, Schedule) – will discuss at next meeting b. Student byline / English Department Coordination – will discuss at next meeting c. Promotion ( Website, Government Channel, Social Media, Other) 10. Dr. Martin Luther King Event Planning – Need list of previous themes Email suggestions of topics/themes Expand beyond essays to multi media Finish discussion at quarterly work session 11. Quarterly Work Session date – September/October – Doodle survey by Shari 12. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar • Budget Report (Enclosed) • Sept 13th Volunteer Reception, Performing Arts Center, 5-7 pm (volunteer & guest invited) • Sept 30th State Human Rights Commission Meeting – Pierre – 10 am • Oct 7th Fall Diversity Potluck, McCrory Gardens Visitor Center, 5-7 pm • Oct 8th Native American Day • Dec 6th Mayor’s Holiday Party, McCrory Gardens Visitor Center, 5-7 pm 13.
