4. Approval of the minutes was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, and seconded by Penny
Hauffe and approved by voice vote.
5. Schedule next meeting: Thursdays Nov 17th and Dec 15th both at NOON. Agenda item – nominating
committee for January election of officers
6. Budget – No expenditures at this time, in November we will discuss how to spend the remaining
funds. Nothing was spent on Common Read forum.
7. Common Read Programs:
A. SDSU & Community Events
B. Wrap-up report on committee sponsored Post Film Discussion Event – October 3rd – The
room was filled to standing only! About a quarter stayed after the film for the discussion.
Lawrence stated that the discussion went well. Inter-faith dialog discussion group would be a
good follow-on event. Lawrence will follow-up with details.
8. Fall Diversity Potluck – October 16th, VFW, 5-7 p.m. – Daktronics passed out the flyer, it was
announced at Faculty Senate. Make sure and pass a sign-up during the event and the email list needs
updating. We are removing names, but have not been adding! VFW has been paid.
9. Selection of 12th Annual Dorothy & Eugene T. Butler Human Rights Award Winner – Scott
Nagy nominated by Lawrence, seconded by George. Approved by voice vote. Steve will reach out to Scott
and make preliminary arrangements noting his basketball schedule. Bio and history of the “Samaritan's
Feet.” Find a location, is the library large enough. We may need a large venue, PAC, Swiftel Center, or
Volstorff. The group likes the idea of Swiftel Center and will check for availability pending Mr. Nagy’s
schedule.
It was suggested by Shari that we think about combining this award with the “Mayor’s Award.” The general
consensus was that this is an idea worth pursuing for next year. We will have to decide the winner in May or
June in order to make this September event. George suggested that the last award be the Butler winner as
they typically make a short speech. We will check with the other groups to get their input.
10. Dr. Martin Luther King Day
A. Schedule – discussion of earlier deadlines – We wish to try to get out the information by
end of November. Can we get this out and collected in December (12-16-2011)? Helps with the logistics!!
Electronic submission of papers only. Judging will occur tentatively 12-22-11.
B. Select theme(s) for poster and essay contests – Poster theme – “Living Together as
Brothers” based on the actual quote, “We must learn to live together as brothers, or perish together as
fools.”
