HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHRCMinutes_2011_09_15Brookings Human Rights Committee Thursday, September 15, 2011 at NOON City Hall - 311 Third Avenue Present: Steve Bayer, Ann Marie Bahr, George Hamer, Penny Hauffe, Lawrence Novotny, and Shari Thornes (city) Guest: Rebecca Deinert (new member), and Jamie Nolan-Andrino (SDSU Director of Diversity) Not Present: Patty Bacon, Chandradhar Dwivedi, and, Angela Hatton 1. Call to order was voiced at 12:12pm 2. Adoption of the agenda was so moved by George Hamer, and seconded by Penny Hauffe and approved by voice vote. 3. Approval of the minutes was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, and seconded by George Hamer and approved by voice vote. 4. Schedule next meeting: Thursday, October 13th at Noon Project and Issue Updates 5. Budget: No discussion at this meeting. 6. Introduction of Ms. Jamie Nolan-Andrino, SDSU Director of Diversity(invited). Jamie gave us a brief discussion of her past employment and positions. Feels strongly about community and university co-involvement. Each member than followed with a brief bio for her. 7. Discuss possible meeting with Ana Luisa Fajer, Consul General from Mexico - September 26-28, 2011. Ann-Marie will coordinate via email with the committee. 8. Community Common Read: A. Community Wide Efforts Update - City group has not meet since May B. Committee Sponsored Event (Oct/Nov) Possible discussion after 10/3 film. Moderated discussion immediately after, moderated by Jamie Nolan-Andrino and sponsored by BHRC. 9. Report on State Human Relations Commission Meeting (8/10/11). See Lawrence’s written report. State committee has received complaints mostly about employment issues. As a group they are trying to ensure that the committee meets on an annual basis. They were unaware about the BHRC, now they know! We will work together. Motion passes (Novotny abstains)(Hamer, Hauffe) to support Lawrence’s travel to the meeting. 10. Fall Diversity Potluck on October 9th. Date moved to October 16th due to Swiftel Center Event. A. Location secured (fall event & future) Lawrence will secure ASAP. B. Advertising - Will commence once date is secured 1) “Save the Date” 2) Update Email List 3) Review Advertising – George 4) Picture Taking 11. Update on two committee vacancies. Rebecca Deinert is one new member, awaiting final approval at new city council meeting. The other member(student) is in progress. 12. Human Rights Award: No discussion except to change 10/13 as deadline. A. Issue Press Release on 9/15 with 10/15 deadline B. Solicit nomination input from past award winners – email past winners 13. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar Sept 30th Soccer Common Read, Fishback Soccer Park Oct 9th Fall Diversity Potluck Oct 16th Youth Soccer Clinic Oct 26th Warren St. John, Author of Outcasts United , PAC, 7 pm Nov 9th Coach Luma Mufleh, Frost, 7 pm 11.
