HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHRCMinutes_2011_05_19Brookings Human Rights Committee Thursday, May 19, 2011 at NOON City Hall - 311 Third Avenue Present: Patty Bacon, Steve Bayer, Ann Marie Bahr, Angela Hatton, Penny Hauffe, Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas, and Shari Thornes (city) Not Present: George Hamer and Chandradhar Dwivedi________________________________ 1. Call to order was voiced at 12:01pm 2. Adoption of the agenda was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, and seconded by Penny Hauffe and approved by voice vote. 3. Approval of the minutes was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, and seconded by Patty Bacon and approved by voice vote. 4. Schedule next two meeting: Wednesday, June 15th at Noon 5. Financial report: discussion/look at what we want to do by looking at past expenditures New Business: 6. Prioritize committee programming for 2011. MLK, Potluck, Human Rights Award, Public Education, and increase/donate money to schools for books. Additionally, topics for the fall forum could include: immigration and migrant workers, refugees, recession impact on agriculture, local economies, and rights of the elderly. Previous considerations were a picnic, pick-up game with community and international community. Topic should relate to the CCR, not just campus but community as well. Changing title of fall forum from Human Rights Forum to Common Read Forum. **August and September agenda item** 7. Student Membership. Continues, find someone that will be active within the committee and focus on human rights issues. 8. 2012 Budget Process. Due July 8th. New narrative requirement; more detailed narrative; rules might change; no more than 2% funding. Patty Bacon will fill document narrative. Project and Issue Updates 9. Spring Diversity Potluck: more than 50 people attended; need to advertise earlier. Tentative fall diversity potluck is October 9th at the VFW. 10. Community Common Read Outcasts Unlimited; read book. Promote the book, meeting with Mayor soon to discuss. More information is forthcoming. **Table to June****Monthly Agenda Item** 11. Co-sponsorship of Public Information Forum with John Esposito. Omit. 12. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar -Community Common Read—monthly agenda item -Look at projects and assign budgets -Spending report—monthly agenda item 13.
