Present: Patty Bacon, Steve Bayer, Ann Marie Bahr, Chandradhar Dwivedi, George
Hamer, Penny Hauffe, Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas, and Shari Thornes (city)
Not Present: Christine Fabian and Angela Hatton_____________________________
1. Call to order was voiced at 12:00pm
2. Adoption of the agenda was so moved by Chandradhar Dwivedi, and seconded by
Penny Hauffe and approved by voice vote.
3. Approval of the minutes was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, and seconded by
Chandradhar Dwivedi and approved by voice vote.
4. Schedule next two meeting: April 13, 2011 at Noon and May 19, 2011 at Noon
New Business:
5. Position statement regarding proposed anti-Shariah legislation: State bills were
struck down in committee. Fall 2011 forum? We need to change the language to a
public information forum with John Esposito as the speaker, pending funding for
honorarium. We could co-sponsor with other organizations and provide lodging for
speaker. This is an educational opportunity to speak about his experiences in
mediating peaceful relationships between Islam and the West. The consensus of the
Sioux Falls and Brookings mosques, and of our committee, is that it is best not to give
the anti-Shariah legislation any publicity.
6. Co-sponsorship of UCC Event: Strike from agenda
Project and Issue Updates
7. Spring Diversity Potluck: Tentative scheduled for April 17th from 5:00pm-7:00pm at
the VFW. Set up will be at 4:30pm of the scheduled date. Repeat order of fall 2010
diversity potluck from Hy-Vee with 75 pieces of chicken, sodas, serving utensils, and
plates. Lawrence will contact members about items. Amount to rent the building is
$125.00. Shari Thornes will handle the press release; George Hamer will handle the
flyers, The Collegian, and radio announcement, plus, bring coffee to the event from
Cottonwood. Laurie Carruthers will send an email to previous attendees about the
event as soon as date is firmly set. Bring cards for those persons’ bringing a dish can
provide their recipe.
8. 2011 Goals and Objectives was so moved, as amended, by George Hamer, and
seconded by Chandradhar Dwivedi and approved by voice vote.
9. Community Common Read Outcasts Unlimited; read book. Promote the book, have
a campus and community pick-up game of soccer. Maybe a picnic? Contact local
soccer organization in July about co-sponsoring the event. **Monthly Agenda Item**
10. Financial Report Review change to earlier in agenda item to 1st item under the New
Business section (#5). Had $9200.00 - $5000.00 (as per Tim Reed CCR) = $4200.00
left in our budget.
11. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar
-The Human Rights Committee at the state level met for their yearly meeting.
-Community Common Read—Monthly agenda item
-Look at projects and assign budgets
12. Adjournment was voiced at 12:48pm.
