Present: Patty Bacon, Dwivedi Chandradhar, Ann Marie Bahr, Christine Fabian, George Hamer, Penny
Hauffe, Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas, and Shari Thornes (city)
Not Present: Steve Bayer and Angela Hatton_____________________________________
1. Call to order was voiced at 12:03pm
2. Adoption of the agenda was so moved by Ann Marie Bahr, and seconded by Dwivedi Chandradhar
and approved by voice vote.
3. Approval of the minutes was so moved by Dwivedi Chandradhar, and seconded by Ann Mari Bahr and
approved by voice vote.
4. Schedule next meeting March 3, 2011 at Noon.
New Business:
5. Goal Setting for 2011 minor revisions are needed to bullet points 2 (change strong to continue), 3
(increase from $500 to $600), 5 (add the words continue and expand), and 7 (revise sentence).
Document will be re-sent to committee members.
6. Action to approve 2010 Annual Report to the City Council was so moved by Patty Bacon with revisions,
and seconded by Penny Hauffe and approved by voice vote.
7. Co-sponsorship of UCC Event **Tabled for March meeting**
8. Request from Local PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays) Chapter: Dustin Bartlett
(President) is requesting assistance with public relations and outreach opportunities with schools and
community. There was a motion to support the organization and place an electronic copy of the PFLAG
organization on the BHRC website voiced by Patty Bacon, and seconded by George Hamer and approved
by voice vote.
9. Legislative Update Lawrence Novotny informed committee that the bullying bill did not pass committee
and the hazing bill did pass. Additionally, the State Human Rights Committee was not abolished; it’s still
active and will meet once a year.
Project & Issue Updates:
10. Diversity Potluck Location Two locations were mentioned as possible locations for future events: the
1921 Building and the Children’s Museum. Possible dates for the event were April 10th, 17th, or the 24th.
Penny Hauffe will make contact with locations and inform committee during the March meeting.
11. Human Rights Award wrap-up Thanks to Patty Bacon for being the Master of Ceremony.
12. Dr. Martin Luther King Event wrap-up Could Swiftel Center could be a possible location next year?
Other locations will be considered due to location of current venue. Committee needs to purchase
appropriate tape for posters.
13. Community Common Read (2010 Wrap-up & 2011 Planning) Committee was informed the book,
Outcasts United, was selected as the Common Read for the following year. Author and Coach would be
able to come with advanced notice. Would two possible locations be available for the event? This year,
the event was held at Frost Arena on the campus of South Dakota State University. **Tabled for
March meeting**

2/9 Equality South Dakota Legislative Reception, 5:30-7:30, Pierre
2/10 Ann Mari Bahr was renewed as Brookings County representative on the Human Rights
Committee
16. Adjournment was voiced at 1:11pm.
