City Hall, 311 Third Avenue Present: Steve Bayer, Patty Bacon, Dwivedi Chandradhar, Ann Marie Bahr, Christine Fabian, George Hamer, Penny Hauffe, Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas, and Laurie Carruthers (city) Not Present: Angela Hatton and Shari Thornes______________________________________ 1. Call to order: 11:31a.m. 2. Adoption of the Agenda: was so moved by Penny Hauffe, and seconded by Dwivedi Chandradhar and approved by voice vote. 3. Approval of the Minutes: was so moved by Dwivedi Chandradhar and seconded by George Hamer and so approved by voice vote. 4. Schedule Next Meeting: February 10, 2011 at noon. New Business 5. Election of Officers (Tabled). Steve Bayer motioned to keep current 2010 Officers for the 2011 year; was moved by Dwivedi Chandradhar, and seconded by Patty Bacon and approved by voice vote. 6. Dr. Martin Luther King Contest Judging and Final Details. Posters will be hung at the Swiftel Center from this coming Saturday, January 15, at 10:30am till January 31st. Penny will pick up posters and banners. Lawrence Novotny informed committee posters must be taken down January 31st, time to be decided. Essay and Posters winners will be formally announced at the January 25th City Council meeting at 6:00pm with essay winners having an opportunity to read their essay to those in attendance. The following are the essay contest winners: High School Middle School 1st: Zarin Rahman, $100.00 1st: Joe Kavanagh, $100.00 2nd: Sarah He, $ 50.00 2nd: Chase Hunter, $ 50.00 3rd : Abbie Sell, $ 25.00 4th/5th grade 1st : Aarushi Rohila, $25.00 Honorable Mention Andrea Hult Poster: Grades K-1st Poster: Grades 2nd/3rd 1st : Anthony Hildebrandt, $25.00 1st : Johanna Miller, $25.00 2nd: Christopher Gross, $10.00 2nd: Ayden Ellis, $10.00 Honorable Mention: Autumn Linde Honorable Mention: Lyndsey Way Poster: 4th/5th 1st: Bridget Knudtson, $25.00 Honorable Mention: Grace Eggebrecht 2nd: Maret Otterson, $10.00 Need someone to take pictures of the Mayoral presentation to essay winners. 7. Human Rights Award Event Update. Need information on Dr. Tim Nichols. Steve Bayer will speak about the award, past recipients, with the Mayor presenting the award. Penny Hauffe informed committee members she will obtain the information about Dr. Tim Nichols. Ceremony will be from 5:30 to 7:00pm on January 26, 2011, at the Brookings Public Library. Catering will be provided by the City; set-up time will be at 4:30pm the day of the event. 8. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar 1/17: MLK Day 1/25: MLK presentations—City Council Meeting at 6:00pm. 2/15 : Annual Report Deadline Agenda Items for February: 1. HRC gift of $500.00 for books to Mickelson Middle School. Need to speak with Shari Thornes. 2. Church of Christ with Native Americans: need more information regarding this item. 9.
