City Hall, 311 Third Avenue Present: Steve Bayer, Patty Bacon, Ann Marie Bahr, George Hamer, Penny Hauffe, Dianne Nagy, Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas and Shari Thornes Not Present: Dwivedi Chandradhar, Angela Hatton, and Ashley Kuecker _______________________________________________________________ 1. Call to Order: 12:01 p.m. 2. Adoption of the Agenda was so moved by George Hamer, seconded by Penny Hauffe and approved by voice vote. 3. Approval of the February minutes: was so moved, with changes, by Lawrence Novotny, and seconded by Ann Marie Bahr and approved by voice vote. December 2009 and January 2010 minutes were moved to April meeting; need to be approved or amended as per committee review. **April agenda item** 4. Schedule next meeting: April 8, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. 5. Legislative Update-House Bill 1144: the bill did not pass with an 8-4 party line vote. Need to present solid data: cases of discrimination and/or testimony. 6. Spring Diversity Potluck is set for April 18, 2010 from 5-7 at the Old Sanctuary building. George Hamer informed committee he will contact Tricia Wek-Visker at ADVANCE for donation of paper goods; additionally, he will also take care of picking up the coffee from Cottonwood. Hy-Vee will be contacted about providing chicken (cut the order in half) and soft drinks. George Hamer told committee members he will take charge of the flyer to be placed around SDSU campus and in The Collegian. Flyer will be emailed to Shari Thornes for press release via Brookings Register and other media. Set up time is 4:30. **April agenda item—reserve Old Sanctuary for future diversity potluck events on the 2nd weekend in October and 3rd weekend in April** 7. Spring co-sponsorship of Dr. MLK commemorative event in April 2010. Date is set for April 5th from 6-9 at the Public Library (Cooper room). Dr. MLK speech will be presented followed by a discussion about addressing the issues. Motion to co- sponsor and provide a donation of up to $200 (advertising costs) for the event was so moved by George Hamer, and seconded by Patty Bacon and approved by voice vote. 8. Mayor’s Initiatives: no update **April agenda item** 9. Upcoming Events Calendar and Announcements: Common read book—Three Cups of Tea. Author to speak with kids at the local school district. Use as both a campus and community read. April Approval of December 2009 and January 2010 minutes Spring Pot-Luck (final phase) Spring co-sponsorship of MLK commemorative event in April 8th Update on the 20th year of Reconciliation Mayor’s Initiative June-Aug 2010 Native American Day (2010-2011 school year); ask J. Brewer to do a presentation presenting both sides and what is the meaning of Thanksgiving Day. 10.
