Minutes of the Meeting of February 10, 2010 at Noon.
City Hall, 311 Third Avenue
Present: Steve Bayer, Dwivedi Chandradhar, George Hamer, Ashley Kuecker, Dianne
Nagy, Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas and Shari Thornes
Not Present: Patty Bacon, Ann Marie Bahr, Angela Hatton, and Penny Hauffe

1. Call to Order: 12:00 p.m.
2. Adoption of the Agenda was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, seconded by Dwivedi
Chandradhar and approved by voice vote.
3. Approval of the December 2009 minutes: moved to March meeting. December
2009, and January 2010 minutes (two meetings) need to be approved or amended as
per committee review. **March agenda item**
4. Schedule next meeting: March 10, 2010 at Noon.
5. Action to approve the 2009 Annual Report was so moved by Dwivedi
Chandradhar, and seconded by Lawrence Novotny and approved by voice vote.
6. Updates:
A. MLK Event Wrap-up: Presentation at the January 2010 city council meeting
with Dwivedi Chandradhar representing the committee. All but two read their
award winning essay at the city council meeting.
B. Legislative Update-House Bill 1144. Drafted and sent to State Representative
Merchant and Pitts. Seeking the support of Representative Pitts; various phone
calls and emails have been made and sent to discuss the bill. The Equality
South Dakota survey results were forwarded (with permission) to State
Representatives. So far six are in favor of the bill with seven needed to pass the
subcommittee and move to the full house. There is an allotment of 30 minutes
of testimony to be heard in favor of this bill with the inclusion of the Equality
South Dakota survey results and the BHRC support letter.
C. Spring Diversity Potluck. Ashley will stop by Old Sanctuary to make contact
with Dan regarding our reservation for the spring potluck set-up by former
member Kristin Asche. **March Agenda item**
D. Spring co-sponsorship of Dr. MLK commemorative event in April 2010.

E. Mayor’s initiative. Steve Bayer informed committee he will call Mayor Reed
to discuss his initiative. Steve will ask Mayor Reed to call State Representative
Pitts. **March agenda item**
7. Upcoming Events Calendar and Announcements:
March 2010 Approval of December 2009 and January 2010 minutes
Spring Pot-Luck (planning phase)
Spring co-sponsorship of Dr. MLK commemorative event in April
2010
Mayor’s Initiative
June-Aug 2010 Native American Day (2010-2011 school year); ask J. Brewer to
do a presentation presenting both sides and what is the meaning of
Thanksgiving Day.
8. Adjournment was voiced at 12:28 p.m.
