HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHRCMinutes_2009_06_25Brookings Human Rights Committee Minutes of the Meeting of June 25, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. City Hall, 311 Third Avenue Present: Ann Marie Bahr, Steve Bayer, George Hamer, Angela Hatton, Penny Hauffe, Ashley Kuecker (new SDSU student representative) Lawrence Novotny, Jay Vargas, and Shari Thornes Also present: Tim Nichols, Interim Diversity Director Not Present: Ryan Howlett, and Tricia Wek-Visker ________________________________________________________________ 1. Call to Order: 12:02 p.m. 2. Welcome to new member and introductions: Ashley Kuecker was introduced to committee members as the new SDSU student representative, followed by committee members introducing themselves. 3. Adoption of the Agenda was so moved by George Hamer, seconded by Ann Marie Bahr and approved by voice vote. 4. Approval of the April minutes was so moved by Lawrence Novotny, seconded by Penny Hauffe and approved by voice vote. 5. Schedule May meeting: July 16, 2009 at 12:00 pm. 6. Updates: A. Fall Human Rights Forum: Penny Hauffe informed committee members about bringing 3 or 4 Tribal leaders to discuss the importance of Native American Day. Penny added that Chuck Woodard has made contact with tribal leaders to discuss tribal thought with local schools (high school, middle and elementary). It was recommended after the committee’s meeting with Mayor Reed on July 16 that Chuck Woodard speak briefly on the progress of the Human Rights Forum. In addition, it was suggested that Chuck Woodard also speak with the Downtown Brookings Inc. to inform them of the significance of Native American day. **August Agenda Item** B. Meeting with Mayor Reed: scheduled for July 16, 2009 at noon. C. Wrap-up report on Spring Diversity Potluck-April 19th: members who attended the event informed committee that roughly about 100 community and students attended the potluck. In addition, more people provided contact information for future events. It was suggested that for the next potluck, write- up cards be provided for individuals bringing food to identity their dish and country of origin. It was recommended that for the next potluck, bottled water be provided in addition to coffee and soft drinks. **August Agenda Item** D. Proposed Ordinance Amendments: have mayoral support for the proposed amendments prior to going to full city council. Steve Bayer informed committee he will speak with Mayor Reed prior to July meeting. E. City funding request for 2010 fiscal year: Shari Thornes informed committee that she will be meeting with the city manager the following day and provide information on events the committee is active. The following were mentioned during the meeting: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Two potlucks (Fall and Spring), the Butler Award and the Forum. 7. Upcoming Events Calendar and Announcements: October 11th: Fall Potluck October 12th: Native American Day October 12th: Proposed Fall Human Rights Forum on Reconciliation 8. Future Agenda Items: Invite Boys & Girls Club, Fall Forum, Final Ordinance and Law Amendments August: Fall Potluck and Fall Human Rights Forum The following is from the BHRC April 2009 meeting: *** It was brought to the attention that the EEOC meeting scheduled for April 16th was not feasible for members to attend with short notice. Contact with the EEOC will be made to set up a date and time in early fall. September 2009 was suggested as a possible training session with the addition of local businesses and SDSU HR departments. *** 9. Adjournment was voiced at 12:56pm.
