Minutes of the Meeting of January 15, 2008 at 11:00 A.M.
City Hall, 311 Third Avenue
Present: Ann Marie Bahr, Steve Bayer, Geoffrey Grant, George Hamer, Kelly Tilmon,
Tricia Wek-Visker and Jay Vargas
Also Present: Shari Thornes, City Clerk and Al Branum, SDSU
Not Present: Kristin Asche and Madeleine Andrawis
1. Call to Order: 11:05 am.
2. Adoption of the agenda was so moved by George Hamer, seconded by Geoffrey
Grant and approved by voice vote.
3. Approval of December minutes was so moved by Tricia Wek-Visker, seconded by
Kelly Tilmon and approved by voice vote.
4. Scheduled next meeting: February 22, 2008 at 12:00 pm.
5. 2007 Annual Report due February 15th: Steve Bayer and Shari Thornes will be
working on this and will email to committee for review.
6. Judging Dr. Martin Luther King Day Contest entries: Steve Bayer abstained
from voting in the entrants for the Middle School essay competition (his son
submitted essay for competition). Tricia Wek-Visker informed committee
members that Outlaw Graphics paid for 50% of the total cost of the MLK banner
and Advance Forward paid the other 50% of the cost. Committee did not have
to pay for any cost of the banner. It was recommended that a “Thank You’ letter
be sent to both businesses for their generosity towards the BHRC in conjunction
with MLK day. The letter will be written up by Steve Bayer and brought to the
next BHRC for all members to sign. The banner will be stored at City Hall for
future MLK events. Thanks Tricia for your hard work. George Hamer went to
Sioux Valley to get the donation on behalf of the BHRC. George told committee
that he took a picture with chairman of their committee but did not get a check.
Need to get the donation from Sioux Valley. The following are the winners for
the Essay and Poster contest held this past January 15, 2008, in conjunction with
MLK day:
High School (essay): 1st place: Alyssa Johnson $100.00
2nd place: Shelon Surat $ 50.00
3rd place: Chelsey Dunkle $ 25.00
Middle School (essay): 1st place: Morgan Minnicks $100.00
2nd place: Yossry Mohamed $ 50.00
3rd place: Damon Bayer $ 25.00
Elementary School (posters):
Grades 4-5
1st place: Kali Nordbye $25.00
2nd place: Gerald Maxwell $10.00
3rd place: Abbey Kephart $ 5.00
Grades 2-3
1st place: Elizabeth Syhre $25.00
2nd place: Rachel Smart $10.00
3rd place: Jackie Maxwell $ 5.00
Grades K-1
1st place: Sophia Lim $25.00
2nd place: Dani Buschenfeld $10.00
3rd place: Carolyn Hieb $ 5.00
7. Upcoming Events Calendar:
January: 21st-MLK Day
January: 22nd—Presentation of MLK winners at City Council meeting (arrive by
5:45 pm)
8. Future Agenda Items:
March: Discussion on having diversity potluck twice a year
March: Possible fund raising event to donate money to the MLK national
monument in Washington D.C.
March: Perceptions of evolution in the classroom (infringement of personal
beliefs)
November: Formation of Nominating Committee (January election of officers)
