City Hall, 311 Third Avenue Present: George Hamer, Kelly Tilmon, Jay Vargas, Tricia Wek-Visker, Steve Bayer and Kristin Asche Also Present: Bonnie Foster of the City Clerk’s office Not Present: Madeleine Andrawis, Ann Marie Bahr, Geoffrey Grant 1. Call to order was sounded by Steve Bayer at 8:09 p.m. 2. Adoption of the agenda was moved by Kelly Tilmon, seconded by Tricia Wek-Visker and approved by voice vote. 3. Approval of February 8 minutes was moved by George Hamer, seconded by Kelly Tilmon and approved by voice vote. 4. March meeting will be at 8:00 am on Thursday, March 15, at City Hall. 5. Program evaluation: Dr. Martin Luther King Day Poster and Essay Contest. Not mandatory to bring essay to council meeting. High School winners read essay at the council meeting. It was suggested that next time we separate stacks by grade level. When showing the posters, they should be separated by grade level. Coales, the empty Chinese Buffet Place, Cottonwood Coffee Shop and Rude’s were mentioned as possible locations for next year’s poster hanging locations. It was suggested that we lockdown a location between October and November to notify schools. In addition to the location, it was recommended that in the months of August and September, members of the BHRC make a personal contact with each school within the city. It was suggested that a member be assign to certain schools as a liaison officer between the school and the BHRC to answer any questions Instructors might have regarding the criteria for the poster and essay contest. It was recommended that a ruled based criterion be added to explain the details of the contest. The art teachers at the elementary and English teachers at the middle and high school campuses are point of contact. 6. Annual Report: members will contact Ann Marie Bahr 7. Report from International Dinner Committee (Hamer, Tilmon, Andrawis): A potluck was recommended to have international students cook a dish from their native country. The convention partner program (15 members) and its Director are willing to work with us as well as the foreign language department. It was recommended that community members be invited to participate in this potluck. Committee members informed the rest that April 19 is a tentative date with April 12 and 13 as alternate dates for the event. The community room and the clock tower building (alumni center) were recommended as possible sites. (*Tabled to March meeting*) 8. Human Rights Award recognition for Andy Janes: this item was tabled to the March meeting. 9. Spring Human Rights Forum (Hamer): was suggested to have Andy Janes to speak on the process of Amendment C. Date, location and time. (*tabled to March meeting) George informed committee about having a fall 2007 HR forum and film series. A date/time/location for Andy Janes to speak in April will be decided in March meeting. 10. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar. **The following items were tabled for the March meeting**: -Report from International Dinner Committee - Human Rights Award recognition for Andy Janes - Spring Human Rights Forum The following items are to be added to the March meeting agenda: -Fishback Financial Award -HR Museum trip to Memphis, TN for child and parent (winners of the Dr. Martin Luther King poster and essay contest) -Letter to the editor: authorizing a committee member to reply in behalf of the committee. Steve Bayer was nominated and accepted the responsibility; further details need to be worked out. 11. April agenda items 11. Adjournment occurred at 9:13 a.m.
