HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHRCMinutes_2007_01_10Brookings Human Rights Committee Minutes of the Meeting of Wednesday, January 10, 2007 at Noon City Hall, 311 Third Avenue Present: Ann Marie Bahr, Geoffrey Grant, George Hamer, Kelly Tilmon, Jay Vargas, Tricia Wek-Visker, Steve Bayer and Kristin Asche Also Present: Shari Thornes, City Clerk Not Present: Madeleine Andrawis 1. Call to order was sounded by Ann Marie Bahr at 12:18 p.m. 2. Welcome of new members- Steve Bayer and Kristin Asche 3. Adoption of the agenda was moved by Geoffrey Grant, seconded by George Hamer and approved by voice vote. 4. Approval of November 2 minutes was moved by Kelly Tilmon, seconded by Geoffrey Grant and approved by voice vote. 5. February’s meeting will be at 8:00 am on Thursday, February 8, at City Hall. 6. Election of Officers: President: Steve Bayer Vice-President: George Hamer Secretary: Jay Vargas Note: The three individuals volunteered for their respective positions. 7. Dr. Martin Luther King Day Poster and Essay Contest were judged by the committee members and winners were agreed upon by voice vote. 7a. Amendment to the prize money was proposed by President Steve Bayer with the addition that place finishing and award money could be divided or increased at the discretion of the committee members. George Hamer moved to accept the changes, seconded by Steve Bayer and agreed upon by voice vote. The following is the agreed prize money for the top finishers in the poster and essay contest: Kindergarten - 1st grade: 1st place: $50.00 2nd - 3rd grade: 1st place: $50.00 4th – 5th grade: 1st place: $50.00 2nd place: $25.00 High School (essay): 1st place: $100.00 2nd place: $50.00 Middle School (essay): 1st place: $50.00 7b. The following is the prize distribution by grade level agreed by committee members: Kindergarten – 1st grade: 1st place tie Both winners will receive $50.00 each. 2nd – 3rd grade: 1st place tie Both winners will receive $50.00 each. 4th – 5th grade: 1st place: $50.00 2nd place: $25.00 Middle School: 1st place: $50.00 High School: 1st place tie Both winners will receive $100.00 each. 2nd place: $50.00 7c. Ann Marie Bahr informed the committee she would contact the City Library for a possible poster placement location. Steve Bayer advised he would contact Mr. Fishback for a possible poster location at the old Coles Building downtown. Both individuals will contact other committee members of final location. 8. Annual Report (Due February 15th) was tabled to next meeting. 9. Announcements/Correspondence/Calendar. - one position in the committee is still open. Shari Thornes recommended that a person not affiliated with SDSU be ask to apply for the position. Applications can be picked up at the City Clerks office. 10. March Agenda items? 11.
