HomeMy WebLinkAboutBHSMinutes_2008_07_24 Brookings Health System Board of Trustees July 24, 2008 Members present: President Roberta Olson, Vice President Rob Jones, Secretary Keith Corbett, Dianna Evers, Sandra Faltemier, Dan Little, Al Baker, Jim Booher, Debra Johnston (arrived at 7:00 p.m.), Jeff Weldon, Ex-officio City Council Members: Scott Munsterman, Tim Reed, Tom Bezdichek, Mike Bartley, Julie Whaley, Mike McClemans, Ryan Brunner, Other Guests: Steve Britzman, Attorney, Rich Helsper, Attorney, Bob Rysavy, Banner Associates, Al Heuton, BEDC, John Cook, Randi Hart, Ron Tesch, Vern Carda, CEO, Kevin Coffey, CFO, Deb Davis, Administrative Assistant Joint Meeting with City Council and Board of Trustees At 7:00 p.m. the Brookings City Council convened in a joint session with the Brookings Hospital Board. Carda presented to the City Council the current master plan under consideration relative to the expansion and remodeling of the Brookings Health System campus. The project will be conducted in multi-year phases and includes the demolition and re-construction of the nursing home on the current site followed by hospital expansion on the site of the current nursing home. Several sections of the hospital will be remodeled. A phased construction schedule would allow the hospital to finance the project with cash flow and reserve and would not require the issuance of debt. The major purpose is to modernize the facility and improve the overall quality of health care. There was discussion about whether or not Brookings Health System should continue to be in the nursing home business as it is a loss leader. The Hospital Board has a position that even though other parts of the operation subsidize the nursing home, it was still part of the overall community mission of health care to have a nursing home. There was also some discussion about whether or not the city should continue to own the facility or if it should be sold to the private sector. The group thought the discussion was timely given the fact that a major investment is being contemplated. The Hospital Board shared their thoughts with the City Council relative to the reasons and rationale as to why the overall health care of the community is best served by continuing as a community-owned facility. No action was taken. This portion of the meeting concluded at 8:38 p.m. At 8:47 p.m. the regular board of trustee meeting was called to order by President Olson.
