HomeMy WebLinkAboutDisMinutes_2013_09_27Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities September 27, 2013 A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2013 in the Brookings City & County Government Center with the following members present: Lonnie Bayer, Jessie Kuechenmeister, Geoffrey Graff, Nadine Gjerde, Sylvia Buboltz, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks and Matt Simet. Kathy Heylens, Dave Miller and Alan Davis were absent. Shari Thornes was also present. Kuechenmeister called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. The agenda was adopted. The August minutes were approved as amended. Next meeting – Friday, October 25 @ 2:00 p.m. New Business Plan review of BEDC Research Park Facility. The facility will house a start-up business and a commercial process for the production of fish meal. The following issues were discussed: • Dimension in front of sinks in bathroom? o Architect response: The sinks are standard lavatories that are ADA compliant. It is 8’-0” to the back wall and we have 30” width at the sink. • Interior signage package details? o Architect response: Signage was not included in the project. • How many spaces are in the parking lot? o Architect response: 1 van accessible stall and 24 regular stalls are provided. o The plans indicate 2 spaces with a shared access aisle. The access must be van width and must comply with all signage requirements. • Reception Counter Design? o Architect response: We do not have a front counter/reception. • Are egress paths from emergency exits doors required to be hard surfaced? • What percentage of the upper cupboards are reach range compliant? o Architect response: There are no upper cabinets at 48” a.f.f. For your information, the cabinet alternate was not accepted because of lack of funds. o Any cabinets in the facility will be installed by the tenants. I will need to work with the tenants to make sure we meet the city’s requirements but will need to a list of the requirements. Final Report on ADA Anniversary Ice Cream Social & Presentation. The Committee sponsored an ADA Anniversary Ice Cream Social at Pioneer Park on Sunday, July 28th. Mayor Reed gave a brief presentation about the ADA and the Committee prior to the band concert. It was a great turnout and the Committee wishes to continue the activity next year. Final Report on 2013 ABLE Awards. The Camelot Intermediate School was a great space for the event. Everyone was pleased with the program, location, food, music and combined event. Proposed article on Playgrounds for South Dakota Municipal League. Geoff Ames provided a lengthy journal for submission to the SDML. The Committee suggested contacting Ames to ask if he’d be willing to submit an abstract or executive summary with a link to the full article. (Simet arrived) Emergency Response and Preparedness Subcommittee Report. Bayer reported the subcommittee has met and reviewed several good emergency response examples. The Committee has requested plan copies from the hospital and the school. Public Education Subcommittee Report. Gjerde reported that the subcommittee had updated the child care brochure and was gathering information regarding child care and the parking sign language. Statewide Meeting in Sioux Falls – October 10th. Bayer, Kuechenmeister, Gjerde, Buboltz, Hartenhoff-Crooks, Miller and Thornes are planning to attend. NDEAM Events. Simet reported the “Handicap This” presenters were scheduled to perform that the high school and a community luncheon on October 9th. City ADA Coordinator’s Report. • Resignation. Sad news - Jeff Vostad submitted a letter of resignation earlier that week effective immediately. • New School. The architect for the new Brookings school will be working with the committee on the designs. • McCrory Gardens Visitor Center. Thornes will be participating in a compliance review of the facility on October 9th.
