HomeMy WebLinkAboutDisMinutes_2010_01_29Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities January 29, 2010 A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 2010 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present: Dave Miller, Jessie Kuechenmeister, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Dave Bertelson, Kathy Heylens, Lonnie Bayer, Kim Lindell, Kurt Cogswell, Alan Davis and Jeff Vostad. Absent: Dona Kornbaum Miller called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The next meeting of the committee was scheduled for February 26, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. Updates on accessibility issues at Frost Arena and the Performing Arts Center were added to the agenda. The agenda was adopted as amended. The November 20th and December 18th minutes were approved as printed. Frost Arena Update - Heylens and Bayer met with Rob Peterson and Kristy Williams regarding accessibility improvements at the SDSU Frost Arena. Plexiglass is being installed along the railing at two ends to improve line of sight for someone in a wheelchair or seating position in the accessible seating area. The restrooms are not currently accessible but are in their long range plans. However, new elevators are not currently in their long range plan. Cogswell questioned if new elevators should have been included when the expansion to the south was done. Performing Center – Bertelson distributed a proposal to provide six additional accessible parking spaces directly adjacent to the Center on the southeast side. An addition has been proposed for the northeast corner which would not impact this proposal. Thornes suggested contacting the primary PAC donors and Mayor Reed to solicit their support for the proposal. Haiti Food Packeting - Lindell asked for volunteers for food packing event for Haiti was planned for March 27th. Several members signed up for the 10-NOON time slot and will meet for breakfast prior at Perkins (8:30 a.m.) Myths & Facts Brochure Project - Lindell is working on a draft document for Committee review. Parking Brochure Distribution -Miller and Kuechenmeister will meet with a Brookings Register reporter on a feature article to promote the brochure and snow removal issues. 2010 National ADA Symposium – ADA Leadership Certification - Thornes reminded members that completion of the online ADA certification is required to qualify for the $1000 travel stipend. Correspondence/Announcements/Calendar February 15th City Annual Report Deadline June 21-23 National ADA Symposium Governor’s Awards. Kuechenmeister is facilitating final submittal of the four local nominations, which are due on February 5th. 2009 Annual Report. Kuechenmeister drafted the 2009 annual report for committee review and action. The Committee thanked her for her work on the repo rt. A motion was made by Vostad, seconded by Heylens, to approve and submit to the City Council. All present voted yes; motion carried. City ADA Coordinator’s Report. Brookings High School Expansion Project – Thornes will email the architect for an update on the project. Access Aisle Signage – This spring the City will install permanent access aisle signage downtown. This comes as a result of a citizen request. Meeting adjourned at 2:40 p.m. Submitted by Shari Thornes
