A meeting of the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at 2:00 p.m. on
Friday, November 20, 2009 in the Brookings City Hall with the following members present:
Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Alan Davis, Dave Miller, Jessie Kuechenmeister, Dave Bertelson, Kathy
Heylens and Jeff Vostad. Absent: Kim Lindell, Lonnie Bayer, Kurt Cogswell and Dona Kornbaum.
Chair Dave Miller called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. The next meeting of the committee
was scheduled for December 18, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. An update on the accessible garden plot
project was added to the agenda. The revised agenda was approved. The October 23rd minutes
were also approved.
NEW BUSINESS
Myths & Facts Brochure Project. Tabled until the next meeting when Lindell could be present.
UPDATES/REPORTS:
School Expansion Plan Review. The subcommittee will meet with school officials and the
architect in early December to review the revised plans. The architect is currently working on a
location to include a family restroom, which was not in the original plans.
Governor’s Awards. The local nominees were recognized at the televised November 17th City
Council meeting. The meeting was very well attended and the nominees seemed to appreciate
the event. One thing was missed was to recognize NEDEMA at the podium. Final nominations
aren’t due until February 5th.
Accessible Garden Plot. Hartenhoff-Crooks informed the Committee that she has an
appointment with Allyn Frerichs next week to discuss the idea of an accessible garden plot.
Frerichs commented that the timing is great in that it may coincide with a City/SDSU grant
designed to achieve improvement in wellness activities.
SPECIAL COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Transportation Board Report. Hartenhoff-Crooks and Thornes attended the meeting. BATA
gave a progress update and overview of future plans. The City Engineer updated on the bike
trail project. The City plans to complete the project in 2010. The bike lanes will also be
painted in 2010. The Board is preparing its annual report to the City Council. Elections are
scheduled for December.
City ADA Coordinator’s Report.
Police Department/City Hall Entrance – Thornes is working with the City Manager,
Police Chief and City Engineer on the proposed design to make the police department
entrance accessible and also provide access to the east entrance of City Hall. Plans will
be on hold until the City makes a final decision on the proposed joint city/county
administration building.
ADA Leadership Network Renewal – All necessary documents were submitted for the
2010 annual renewal.
OTHER:
Correspondence/Announcements
Election of Officers will be held at the December meeting.
The annual report to the City is due February 15th.
The accessible polling places needs to go back on the committee’s work list.
