Meeting Minutes
June 13, 2008
A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who have Disabilities was held at
2:00pm on Friday, June 13, 2008 in the Brookings City Hall meeting room with the
following members present: Dave Bertelson, Alan Davis, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks,
Dona Kornbaum, Jessie Kuechenmeister, Victoria Riggs, Lisa Sonnenburg, and Jeff
Vostad. City ADA Coordinator, Shari Thornes was also present. Members not present:
Kurt Cogswell and Dave Miller.
Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, July 18, 2008 at 2pm at City Hall.
New Business:
National ADA Symposium Report (Hartenhoff-Crooks): Nancy reported on the
sessions she attended. Some of the topics Nancy shared about include: ADA
Accessibility Guidelines and the issuance of building permits, Sect. 508 Rehabilitation
Act, Disaster Preparedness, Higher Education in ADA, Accessible Recreation, and IDEA.
Nancy has more information and handouts for anyone who is interested. Also, Nancy
indicated she would like to see the committee brainstorm ways to get as many members
to attend the Symposium as possible!
Old Business:
Project Updates/Reviews:
Hospitality Ratings Project: Victoria reported on the status of this project. A checklist
has been approved by the subcommittee that will be used in examining locations. A
cover sheet has been developed to summarize the results of the visits. The subcommittee
plans to invite hotels (and restaurants in the future) to participate. The involvement
of local establishments will be voluntarily, and if not invited, the subcommittee will not
visit. The subcommittee has contacted the Chamber of Commerce and is working with
them to contact local establishments.
Emergency Registry Project: Lisa contacted Mark Stratton, at the Brookings Police
Department and he indicated there were some snags with the 911 system and did not feel
they would be able to participate. Lisa will ask Mark to come talk at the July Brookings
Committee for People who have Disabilities meeting.
Brookings Transportation Board Report: no report given
Citizen business accessibility concerns: Concerns were brought to City Clerk’s
attention by a local citizen. A subcommittee will further look into the accessibility of the
local Post Office (ramp, door, etc).
ADA Coordinator’s Report:
Accessible Voting Booths: A complaint was received from a local citizen
regarding the accessible voting booth provided at a precinct. Shari will look into
ordering accessible voting booths prior to the November election.
Streetscape update: Weekly updates are available to the public.
Access Notice Complaint: A complaint was received regarding the notice given
on a meeting.
Other: The Committee will continue to work with SDSU and city departments
and provide resources and input as appropriate.
Other: Lisa reported the success and impact of the city pool having a wheelchair lift.

--2008 City Curb Ramp Plan
--2008 City Park Improvements Plan
--Comment on Department of Justice’s Proposed Amendments to Titles II & III of
the ADA
ABLE Awards: Committee members made site visits to the following: SDSU Enterprise
Center, Bravos, Arby’s, and the Shamrock. After the completion of the visits, the
committee members unanimously decided that for 2008, one ABLE Award would be
given, and the Shamrock was the recipient of the award. Lisa will order the plaque for
the Shamrock.
