January 11, 2008
A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who Have Disabilities was held at
2:00p.m. on Friday January 11, 2008 in the Brookings City Hall with the following
members present: Kurt Cogswell, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Dave Bertelson, Vickie
Riggs, Jeff Vostad, Dave Miller and Lisa Sonnenburg. Members not present: Emily
Bennett, Dona Kornbaum and Tom Schaffer.
Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, February 8th, 2008 at 2p.m.
Annual Goal Setting: Committee discussed having a durable medical equipment drive
every other year. On the off year, committee discussed giving more presentations for
the purpose of disability awareness to businesses and the community. Committee
would also like to survey hotels, restaurants, retail, parks, museums, etc. to gain
accessibility information to provide to visitors and the community. The information
will then be put into the Chamber book and/or other literature for public viewing.
Project Updates/Reviews:
A) Performing Arts Center Parking Update: Nancy will be meeting with the
PAC in January to discuss accessible parking.
B) National ADA Symposium Attendance: Shari will be attending and if
funds allow, one or two committee members can attend also. Committee
members are to let Shari know as soon as possible if they would like to
attend.
C) Annual Report: Due by February 15th. If any changes, let Kurt or Shari
know.
D) Residential Housing: Nancy has been attending the meetings and stated
that there has been more progress with the project.
E) Schedule subcommittee Meeting for Emergency Registry Project: Nancy
and Lisa will meet on Wednesday at Nancy’s office to discuss the ERP.
F) Brookings Transportation Board: Kurt will be the representative of our
committee, which will begin in February. There is still a citizen spot
opened.
G) Disability Booklet: Lisa reported that there will be 6 new individuals
featured in the booklet. The goal is to have these completed by
summer/fall.
ADA Coordinator’s Report/Updates:
There will be an expansion of the bike trails and the committee may be
asked to be involved.
The Swiftel Center has a new Manager and she wanted to know what the
updated ADA policies and procedures are so they are in compliance with
them.
All committee minutes will be sent to the City Manger and Council as well
as the packet.
Laurie Carruthers will be working under Shari. She will be assembling and
sending out the committee’s packets.
