A meeting for the Brookings Committee for People who Have Disabilities was held at
2:00p.m. on Friday January 12, 2007 in the Brookings City Hall with the following
members present: Kurt Cogswell, Emily Bennett, Nancy Hartenhoff-Crooks, Dave
Bertelson, Jessie Kuechenmeister, Erin Brubakken, Jeff Vostad and Lisa Sonnenburg.
Members not present: Vickie Riggs, Dona Kornbaum and Tom Schaffer.
Next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Friday, February 23rd, 2007 at 2p.m.
Emergency Preparedness Plans Subcommittee Update: Currently on hold. Erin will
meet with Chief Gums from BPD to see what the protocol is. There is an action plan
and banners will be made.
Residential Sub-Committee Process: Jessie and Vickie met with NAMI. Nancy
Sonnenburg will be speaking with Bill Price from ECMH. Vickie, Jessie and Dona
visited the facility in Huron. The discussion is still about funding; Where will it come
from? How much to run and maintain the facility? Non-Profit?
Annual Report: Due by February 15th. If any changes, let Kurt or Shari know.
Emergency Network: Vickie has suggested that the committee get involved with
devising an Emergency Services Plan for Persons with Disabilities, elderly individuals
and others with special needs. Vickie recommended that these individuals register
with the Brookings Police Department or we may have to get people registered. A
subcommittee was formed to work on the Emergency Network as well as to talk
about trying to obtain a Mental Health Assisted Living in Brookings. Members on the
subcommittee are Jessie, Vickie, Dona, Emily and Lisa.
Barrier Awareness Days: Emily will make the necessary contacts for this.
ADA Coordinator’s Report/Updates:
DOT appropriations freezing at last year’s level. Must contact
Congressional Delegation Workers.
Leadership Network (ADA) is in the works of lining up a conference in
Colorado Springs, CO.
The latest edition of DBTAC is online.
Governor’s Awards Luncheon/Conference in Pierre is scheduled for March
5-7th.

Unmet goals are: on-line training for the committee and the committee website.
