OFFICIAL MINUTES
The Board of Health members enjoyed a tour of the landfill, before the meeting
started.
Dr. Merritt Warren called the Board of Health meeting to order on Tuesday, August
19th, 2008 at 7:15 p.m. at the Brookings City Landfill.
Committee Members present: Dr. Merritt Warren, Emil Klavetter, Pat Lyons, Trish
Matson Buus, Karen Cook and Paul Irwin
.
Committee Members absent: Mary Wagner, LuAnn Napton and Jesse Ronning
Others present: Robert McGrath and Todd Langland
1. Approval of Minutes: (Matson Buus/Lyons) Motion to approve minutes for the May
20th, 2008 meeting.
All present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED.
2. Additions to agenda: no Additions
3. Approve Agenda: (Klavetter/Irwin Motion to approve agenda.
All present voted aye. MOTION CARRIED.
4. 2008 Budget Update – The City Council made no changes to the Landfill and
Collection budgets and first reading of the budgets is set for August 26th, 2008 and final
reading is on September 9th, 2008. So, the budgets are set for 2009.
. 5. Change in Collection Service – Starting September 2nd, 2008 The collection service
will be pickup tree branches on Monday and Tuesday and yard waste bags on Thursday
and Friday. These two services changed due to the continued growth of the city and
added time it takes to collect all the garbage on Mondays and Tuesdays.
The single stream recycling program will also start on September 2nd, 2008. The program
will allow the city to collect more recyclable items and not have to sort them The material
collected will be dropped off at Cooks Wastepaper & Recycling, baled and shipped to
Sioux Falls for sorting.
6. Update Pandemic Influenza Planning- The committee is still working and planning
to get as many people as need in the community to help them prepare for this disaster if it
would happen.
7. SDSWMA Fall Meeting – The Annual South Dakota Solid Waste Management
Association meeting will in held in Sioux Falls on September 17th, 2008 thru September
19th, 2008. All members of the Board of Health are invited to attend just let Bob or Todd
know by the 8th of September.
8. Electric Waste Collection Event – The Brookings Landfill will be holding an Electric
Waste drop-off program for the general public on Saturday, September 20th from 9:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
9. Other Business – Next meeting will be set for November.
10. Adjournment: (Cook/Lyons) Motion to adjourn meeting. All present voted aye.
